Ben's death marks a first in Snowpiercer, and it's sure to have a knock-on effect

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen his fair share of apocalyptic narratives, I must admit that the demise of Ben Knox on Snowpiercer left quite an impact. His heroic act of separating the trains was not just a game-changer for the plot, but it felt like a turning point in the series itself.

Throughout the course of the series, Snowpiercer has experienced several fatalities. However, none of these deaths can compare to the heroic sacrifice made by Ben Knox in the latest episode, which marks a unique and significant event in the show’s history.

Ben found out he needed to physically separate the two trains from the exterior. What he hadn’t realized was that Big Alice didn’t have any manual controls, and the only option to detach the trains on their own was by doing so from outside. She hurried to assist Ben in his last minutes, but it didn’t affect the end result.

Currently, the residents of Big Alice are faced with the sorrowful task of bidding farewell to yet another cherished companion. However, this grief may be more profound than it initially appears.

Ben is the first engineer to die in Snowpiercer

While all deaths are heartbreaking, some are bigger in terms of the story and the fate of the people. Ben is the first engineer to die in Snowpiercer. At least, that we know of. We have no idea where Melanie is, but it’s highly unlikely that she is dead. The show can’t kill her off-screen.

1. Engineers are the only ones authorized to operate the train. Ben managed his act due to Miles reaching Big Alice. While Alex was in the silo, Miles seized control of Big Alice and safely evacuated everyone once the train was detached. He’s been preparing for this role since Miles joined the program.

Since this situation is unprecedented, it’s unlikely that there’s a predetermined course of action. Miles can certainly navigate them back to New Eden, but he wasn’t part of the original construction of the train. That was Ben’s job. He was present with Melanie during its setup, and he stood by her for the first seven years, ensuring Snowpiercer functioned smoothly. Ben is intimately familiar with every nook and cranny of the train.

As a devoted fan, I must admit that the departure of our engineer feels like a significant hit for all of us. Miles has been the one steering our proverbial train, guiding us through each twist and turn. If Miles encounters any unforeseen challenges, it’s clear we won’t have anyone to take the wheel until we reach New Eden and Javi steps in. This leaves us in a delicate situation; we must grapple with the loss while also devising a new strategy amidst the lingering threat of Milius.
