Benedict Cumberbatch starred in three films released in 2025, including the dark comedy The Roses and Wes Anderson’s newest movie, The Phoenician Scheme. A third film, The Thing with Feathers, also came out, though it was a smaller release and may have flown under the radar.
This British drama, inspired by Max Porter’s book Grief Is the Thing with Feathers, stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a father coping with the sudden loss of his wife and raising his two young sons. As he grieves, his life falls apart, and he finds himself haunted by a mysterious and unwelcome visitor.
If you didn’t get a chance to see the British drama The Thing with Feathers when it came out in cinemas in November 2025, you can now watch it on BFI Player in the UK.

Critics had a mixed reaction to The Thing with Feathers, giving it a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences generally liked it more, with one IMDb reviewer describing it as “a genuinely impressive adaptation.”
Reviewers praised the adaptation as a skillful take on a difficult story and subject matter. While acknowledging it’s a demanding and emotionally resonant watch, they found it ultimately rewarding, particularly highlighting Benedict Cumberbatch’s outstanding performance.
Whether Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Doctor Strange in the next Avengers movie is still unknown. However, he’s confirmed to appear in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming thriller, Wife & Dog, which also features James Norton, Rosamund Pike, and Paddy Considine. The film is scheduled for release in theaters in October.
