The Roses spoilers follow.
While The Roses features some lively and funny moments, it also tackles serious and thought-provoking themes. Now that the movie is popular on Disney+, many viewers are wondering what the ending signifies.
This movie is based on Warren Adler’s 1981 novel, The War of the Roses, and tells the story of Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Ivy Rose (Olivia Colman), a married couple who slowly start to resent each other.

As their rivalry escalates and they try to outdo each other, the story culminates in a passionate confession of love. However, just as they declare their feelings, the scene abruptly cuts to white, suggesting a devastating gas explosion.
The ending is open to interpretation, leaving viewers wondering if Theo and Ivy lived. The stars of the show, along with director Jay Roach and writer Tony McNamara, have all shared their perspectives on how it concludes.
Colman told Entertainment Weekly that the couple is now very happy and has stopped arguing. He imagines they’ve likely bought a small boat and enjoy spending quiet time together at sea.

Cumberbatch explained that, given how far things have gone, strong protective measures are essential. He believes those involved would greatly benefit from returning to therapy, acknowledging their mistakes, and saying, ‘We made errors, but we’re committed to fixing things and preserving what’s important.’
They’re looking for something uniquely theirs to bond over, like a dog. They already share a beautiful home, and seem to value material possessions. Perhaps they’ve stopped using the kitchen altogether.
Ben Stiller, famous for his work in Meet the Parents, shared that the film’s ending carries a touching message. He hopes audiences will leave thinking, ‘They were so close to understanding!’

I really like the feeling of it being a warning. It suggests you might be able to solve a problem, but not before it’s too late. It’s like a chain reaction – one wrong decision can quickly cause a series of terrible consequences.
So, I finally checked out The Roses – it came to Disney+ earlier this week after being in theaters in August – and honestly, it’s really good! It’s already hit #4 on their most-watched list, which is awesome to see.
The Roses is streaming now on Disney+.
