Ben Fogle’s Heartbreaking Loss and Mental Health Journey: A Story of Grief, Resilience, and Hope
After the tragic loss of his stillborn son Willem in 2014, Ben Fogle confessed that he transformed into someone who needed to maintain control over situations.
Last year, the broadcaster, aged 51, experienced a mental health collapse, a result of his prolonged battle with grief. Previously, he had shared his experiences on this matter.
While Ben was in Canada, his wife Marina had to be urgently taken to a hospital in Austria, where they tragically lost their premature baby boy at 33 weeks.
Prior to the birth of their son Ludo in 2009 and daughter Iona in 2011, they (he and Marina) had experienced a miscarriage in 2008 and were already heartbroken before having children.
In a heartfelt and open conversation with The Sun, I poured out my feelings of powerlessness following the tragic loss of our stillborn baby.
A while back, my spouse and I experienced the heartbreaking loss of our stillborn son. It’s incredible how one copes with such grief. My partner, Marina, was particularly vulnerable with her feelings during this time.

In a more relaxed manner, I held back my emotions, not implying they were any less intense, rather I contained them internally. One significant event in my life was developing an obsession with control, as I had previously lost control in that situation.
When the incident occurred, I found myself in Canada at the time, requiring a flight back home. The uncertainty about my wife’s survival weighed heavily on me. There have been moments in my life, and this is one of them, where I felt completely powerless.
Previously, Ben openly disclosed that he experienced severe paranoia and anxiety, which were part of a mental health crisis he encountered. He also provided a glimpse into the strategies he employed for his healing process.
In the aftermath of a crisis, Ben, who has been diagnosed with ADHD, shared that he employed cognitive behavioral therapy and medication, along with reducing his workload and streamlining his lifestyle, to aid in his recovery, likening the process to weathering a storm.
In a detailed Instagram message, the travel host explained that he chose to reveal his battles with mental health, finding it important to be equally transparent about these issues as he’s been regarding his physical health struggles.
Ben wrote: ‘A year ago I suffered a mental health wobble. An episode. A storm. A blip
There might not be a particular name for it, but what happened could be described as a total breakdown or burnout. Since then, I’ve embarked on quite an adventure and discovered many aspects of my unique neurological traits.

Additionally, I have weathered the tempest. By employing cognitive-behavioral therapy, medication, and now alternative healing methods, I find myself restored to my former self once more.
‘Gone is the crippling paranoia and anxiety, replaced by my calm old self.
I’m opening up to you primarily because I feel that, being part of the same journey, it’s essential for us both to acknowledge not just our triumphs but also our weaknesses and struggles.
I’m not doing this to follow a trend or seek pity. Instead, if such an event occurred with me, it could potentially happen to anyone.
Or simply:
I’m not jumping on a bandwagon or seeking sympathy; it could easily happen to any of us.
However, much like a fractured bone, a lung afflicted by pneumonia, or an infection that eats away at flesh (all of which I’ve experienced), this situation is similarly difficult and challenging.
‘Healing is within our reach. Experiences, whether positive or negative, do not shape our identity nor diminish our strength. Instead, they underscore our humanity, showing that we are susceptible to the stresses of contemporary living.’
‘Mental health traumas shouldn’t carry a stigma, but rather serve as a wake-up call for the growing complexity of the world around us.’
As a committed simplifier, I’ve found great relief in minimizing and streamlining my lifestyle. This translates into spending less time on social media, reducing workload, and easing the pressure to be flawless. The outcomes are profound: fewer worries, less stress, reduced anger, and less fixation on trivial matters.

Additional time has brought me back to my normal self. It’s as if I am rediscovering myself again. I remain the same simple person I’ve always been. With love, peace, and simplicity.”

In February, Ben shared that he had been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), following a period of mental health difficulties he experienced.
Ben, a person who has openly discussed his dyslexia, mentioned that following difficulties with his psychological well-being, he experienced a significant shift in his neural functioning.
The Countryfile celebrity emphasized that the condition doesn’t turn him into a delicate individual, but instead, it renders him more exposed or susceptible, as he shared insights about his adaptation following the diagnosis.
Ben expressed his dislike for labels, a sentiment he’s held for quite some time. To him, the notion of a single term encapsulating our essence seems overly simplistic and fails to capture the complexities and subtleties that make each individual unique.
“We’re not just a simple label; we’re complex individuals. I may be privileged, but I’m also empathetic. People might know me as a public persona, yet I’m quite reserved and shy at heart.
‘As a successful, award-winning writer with dyslexia, I want to emphasize that just like me, everyone has their own unique neurological characteristics, which make them special in their own way.’
Ben, who’s been married to his wife Marina since 2006, went on to say: ‘I’ve just received a diagnosis of ADHD *with a hint of skepticism*. However, it’s important to acknowledge that my brain has undergone some changes.’

A contemporary mental health issue served as a trigger for my diagnosis. For quite a while, I’ve felt distinct from others, and this has been the case for me.
Facing certain parts of life has turned into a tougher challenge, yet a diagnosis often brings clarity and rationality.
It could be due to my advancing years or maybe indicative of a larger societal issue. Despite having ADHD, I remain fundamentally the same person.
I don’t use it as an excuse for myself, and neither should others view it as a cause for caution. It doesn’t mean I’m weak or brittle; instead, it signifies that I am exposed or susceptible.
Just like everyone else, I may have a slightly neurotic twist that sets me apart, yet it’s these differences that make us individually special. This quirkiness fuels my creativity and deepens my empathetic understanding of others.
‘My unique neurology shapes my identity, and I wear it with pride. A clinical diagnosis offers me insight into myself – revealing both my vulnerabilities and my abilities. In essence, it’s about understanding my strengths and challenges. And above all, it’s about embracing my individuality, love, and peace.’
In my role as a lifestyle guide, I’ve always advocated for transparency regarding one’s personal wellbeing. In this context, I personally experienced an unsettling incident back in 2013 when my drink was tampered with, leading to what I later came to understand as a psychotic episode. It’s important to share such experiences in the hopes of educating others and fostering open conversations about mental health.
In 2020, he disclosed that he had made an attempt on his life while socializing at a countryside tavern in the Cotswolds region.
He shared a terrifying incident he went through with his fans, describing it as ‘one of the most frightening events I’ve ever lived.’
