Ben Affleck’s Shocking Exit: Why Batman’s Best Return is Now Impossible
It’s unfortunate that Ben Affleck, who delivered an exceptional portrayal of Batman in Zack Snyder’s DC universe, may not return to the role. The Snyderverse’s Batman performance was highly praised, but it’s important to note that the controversial nature of these movies wasn’t entirely Snyder’s fault. The earlier management at DC lacked a coherent strategy for the franchise, leading to numerous production challenges. Unfortunately, Affleck, one of our finest live-action Batman actors, was impacted negatively by the challenges within the DCEU.
Affleck’s initial portrayal of Bruce Wayne in the movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” not only stirred intense debate, but it also didn’t lead to a standalone Batman film for him. Even now, I find myself yearning for what an Affleck-led Batman movie might have offered, given the tantalizing glimpses we’ve had and the prospect of Deathstroke being involved, which promises to be thrilling. Regrettably, it appears my hope for an Affleck comeback as Batman may not come true, as he has recently spoken about his past and future in the superhero realm.
Ben Affleck Is Done With Superhero Movies
The Actor Has No Interest In A Marvel Or DC Return
Prior to embodying Batman and making his mark in the superhero realm, Ben Affleck had already brought other superheroes to life. In 2003, he played Marvel’s Daredevil in a standalone film, and he also portrayed George Reeves, the first on-screen Superman, in Hollywoodland. Although Affleck has made significant contributions to the superhero genre, it appears that his involvement in future superhero movies may come to an end, as he has expressed reluctance to continue in this field.
During a chat with GQ, I acknowledged that my portrayal of Batman had left my son feeling a bit uneasy, which made me understand that it might have been too intense for a significant portion of viewers. But, stepping away from the Batsuit and avoiding other superhero roles isn’t because of this realization about the tone; instead, it’s due to my waning passion for the genre. In fact, my Daredevil character was initially planned to feature in Deadpool and Wolverine’s concept art, but unfortunately, he never made it onto the big screen. Here’s the exact quote:
“[I]t wasn’t the right fit for me… I didn’t feel the creative joy that I normally get from making a movie, and so I couldn’t get past day one. It was an enormous amount of stress.
I thoroughly enjoyed working on the Batman film, and creatively speaking, I had a strong fondness for the concept I envisioned – an older, damaged Bruce Wayne. This aspect was significantly emphasized in our initial movie. However, as production progressed, it became clear that it was becoming too old for a substantial portion of the audience. In fact, my own son found it too frightening to watch at the time. When I noticed this, I realized we had a predicament on our hands.
To be honest, I’m not keen on revisiting that specific genre anymore. It’s not because of the bad experience itself, but rather, my enthusiasm for its appeal has waned. Frankly, I wouldn’t want to find myself in a similar situation again. There were many aspects that didn’t quite align – objectives, understandings, and expectations. At that time, I wasn’t contributing much of value to the project either. To put it frankly, I had my own share of shortcomings during that period. One reason for the poor experience was that I was bringing a lot of negative energy to work each day instead of positive vibes. I wasn’t causing issues, but I simply did my job and left. However, one needs to do more than just that to make things work effectively.
I Wanted To See Ben Affleck’s Batman Return For A Crisis On Infinite Earths Movie
The Multiverse Is The Perfect Way To Tap Into DC’s Snyderverse
Although devoted supporters persistently advocate for the Snyderverse to resurface on Netflix or another platform, enabling Zack Snyder’s Justice League concept to materialize visually, I’m skeptical about its feasibility. The studio has shifted gears, with James Gunn’s DC Universe now taking center stage. However, there might be a chance for the Snyderverse, or at least its prominent figures, to reappear in a Crisis on Infinite Earths film. The multiverse narrative is one of DC’s strongest, and the live-action version demonstrated by the Arrowverse underscores its potential.
Before the premiere of “The Flash” in 2023, there were whispers suggesting Ben Affleck might reprise his role as Batman under certain circumstances. My ideal scenario for a Crisis on Infinite Earths film is that Affleck’s Batman, Henry Cavill’s Superman, and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman find themselves stranded in another dimension – much like Alexander Luthor and other characters did in the comics. The DC Extended Universe’s Trinity could be central figures in this event, with the studio keeping the option open for them to reappear if the multiverse story proves popular, paving the way for future appearances.
How Batman’s Movie Future Could Make Up For Affleck’s Decision
James Gunn Has Plans For Multiple Versions Of Bruce Wayne
In the DCEU, despite some controversy, Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman stands out as one of its most beloved elements. This implies that the actor stepping into the role next will have some big shoes to fill. To soften this transition, DC is planning for two distinct versions of Bruce Wayne to be present in live-action storytelling. Following the success of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”, Robert Pattinson has been chosen to continue as that universe’s Batman for another two movies. A new Batman will be selected for “The Brave and the Bold” film and the upcoming DCU.
With a touch of guarded enthusiasm considering the ongoing hold-ups and ambiguity surrounding both the Elseworlds Batman series and DC’s Bruce Wayne, if DC successfully brings both versions to life, there’s a wealth of thrilling Batman stories in store for cinema audiences in the near future. By combining the best aspects of Affleck’s portrayal with Pattinson’s Batman inhabiting a grittier universe, while the DCU Bruce Wayne serves as an experienced leader of the Bat-Family, the future of Batman on the big screen seems promising, even though Affleck’s tenure has ended.
