Ben Affleck’s “loopy” thriller debuts with strong Rotten Tomatoes rating
As a gaming enthusiast, I couldn’t help but feel the thrill when the long-awaited follow-up to Ben Affleck’s action-packed saga, The Accountant 2, finally dropped its opening scores on Rotten Tomatoes after the initial wave of reviews.
The follow-up to director Gavin O’Connor’s 2016 movie marks the return of Affleck’s Christian Wolff, an accountant who has autism and has made a living out of ‘uncooking’ the books of criminals and terrorists to uncover embezzlement.
In the series “The Bear,” Christian reconnects with his sibling, Braxton (played by Jon Bernthal), and together they work on unraveling a homicide that has a personal impact on them.
Prior to its cinema debut next month, “The Accountant 2” has garnered a robust rating of 86% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on 22 reviews as of now.
Here’s what some of the critics have been saying so far:
Variety
For my perspective, the potential of this film series could only move in a positive direction, and I’m delighted to confirm that it did. In simpler terms, “The Accountant 2” turned out to be an enjoyable, eccentric, and excessively violent experience.
Deadline
Even though most sequels don’t outshine their originals, Gavin O’Connor’s long-awaited The Accountant 2 proves to be an unexpected delight.
The Hollywood Reporter
Though a critic might prefer less intense violence, as it could become routine, enthusiasts of the original movie are likely to appreciate and cheer for many appealing aspects in this lively portrayal of a brotherly bond.
The Guardian
While it’s not particularly revolutionary or outstanding, it still manages to surpass the modest expectations set for a debatable sequel. It offers enough appeal to warrant another successful home viewing experience.
Screen International
The initial release from 2016 contained some outrageous elements, yet the sequel effectively embraces the absurdity, resulting in a more enjoyable experience. This second part manages to avoid falling into the trap of self-parody.
The Wrap
“The Accountant 2 surpasses its original by keying into a lenient and dangerously playful tone.”
The Accountant 2 is released in US cinemas on April 25. A UK release date is TBC.
