Ben Affleck is experiencing a new period of success. Two years after the flop of the movie “Hypnotic” at the box office, it has discovered a new fanbase on Amazon Prime Video.
In the UK and Ireland, the movie “Robert Rodriguez’s Vehicle,” which premiered in 2023, is currently the most-viewed film on the streaming platform, having achieved this status only a few days following its release.
The movie named “Hypnotic” didn’t fare well either financially or with critics when it initially came out. It managed to earn only $2.4 million during its first weekend, screening in a total of 2,118 theaters.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the movie “Hypnotic,” despite being starred by Ben Affleck, had the poorest nationwide debut among all films he’s starred in, considering its estimated budget of $65 million and the earnings it managed to gather during its opening weekend.
Regarding reviews, Empire labeled the sci-fi movie as a “puzzling thriller,” while The Guardian deemed the film’s storyline as “nonsensical nonsense.” Despite this, Hypnotic could potentially receive another chance on Prime Video due to its growing popularity among viewers.
Focusing on detective Danny Rourke, played by Affleck, who is deeply affected by the disappearance of his daughter, the movie chronicles Rourke’s journey as he unravels a series of bank robberies linked to her abduction. Additionally, he encounters a secret government operation and forms an alliance with hypnotist Diana Cruz, portrayed by Alice Braga.
Alongside Affleck and Braga, the cast includes JD Pardo, Dayo Okeniyi, Jeff Fahey, Jackie Earle Haley, and William Fichtner as well.
In 2021, the movie titled Hypnotic encountered numerous obstacles on its journey to hit the big screen. The company responsible for marketing and distribution, Solstice Studios, unfortunately derailed later that year. Ketchup Entertainment then stepped in, showcasing an early version of Hypnotic at SXSW in March 2023 as a “work in progress.” Two months after this screening, they officially confirmed the release date.
Before the movie’s release, Affleck shared with HeyUGuys that Rodriguez’s script, with its many intricate layers, captivated him.
He stated that to truly grasp the full depth of the movie, one needs to watch it again as there are numerous parts that may initially seem odd or unsettling, but later make sense. What he enjoys about it is its intricate, multi-faceted nature.
