Ben Affleck reveals why his iconic Armageddon commentary is a career highlight
Ben Affleck has revealed why his iconic Armageddon commentary is a highlight of his career.
In a well-known DVD commentary for Michael Bay’s film, Affleck humorously admits asking the director to clarify the plot of the 1998 movie.
In a now-famous video clip, Affleck openly disclosed that he had posed a question to Michael regarding why oil drillers seemed more readily adaptable to astronaut training than vice versa, and Michael responded by advising him to keep quiet.

In a recent conversation with GQ, Affleck expressed pride about a notable accomplishment in his career, stating: “That’s one of the milestones in my career that I feel comfortable giving myself a congratulatory pat on the back.
I strongly feel that this DVD commentary is likely among the top five best of all time, and it seems no one paid attention to it initially. I didn’t receive any feedback at the time, but years later, when people finally listened to it, I believe few cared or appreciated it until then.
I found myself quite taken aback when I discovered myself speaking so candidly, as everything I said was entirely accurate. Yet, that’s exactly the issue: it’s not appropriate to reveal every truth in such a setting.
During the interview, Ben Affleck, who shared screen time with stars like Bruce Willis and his romantic co-star Liv Tyler, additionally discussed his emotions prior to filming the hit movie.
He shared, “I envisioned myself starring in a large-scale action film, and I found immense enjoyment in this role. Interestingly, while filming, I discovered that occasionally the production team wasn’t overly concerned with maintaining a coherent narrative.
He concluded: “There’s a sense of being small and of this thing being big.
In essence, I often found myself feeling insignificant, like an ant on an elephant’s back, when I shared my thoughts about the discussion I had with Michael regarding the seemingly paradoxical fact that it appears more straightforward to educate oil drillers for space travel than to teach astronauts how to drill a hole in the ground.
Armageddon is available to stream on Disney+.
