Ben Affleck recreates iconic ‘sad Affleck’ smoking meme after years spent trying to quit nicotine

Okay, so you will NOT believe this! Ben Affleck – MY Ben, honestly – was spotted looking exactly like that famous ‘sad Affleck’ meme again, you know, the one with him smoking? And get this – his son, Fin, did the SAME THING just days before! It’s like…a family tradition of brooding coolness? I swear, they’re both just living the mood. I’m obsessed!

The famous actor, 53, was photographed looking unhappy during a recent appearance in Los Angeles, sparking potential online memes and discussions.

Ben Affleck didn’t seem pleased while waiting for his car, and was seen smoking a cigarette at the valet stand.

Ben Affleck, looking irritated, wore a grey shirt-jacket over a blue button-down shirt, paired with khaki pants and brown leather boots.

He had short, graying hair neatly combed to one side and a beard to match, which he noticed while smoking.

Affleck first gave up nicotine two decades ago, with the help of a hypnotherapist and support from his close friend, Matt Damon.

The latest photos reminded many people of a popular meme featuring Ben Affleck, referencing the now-famous ‘sad Affleck’ picture that went viral over eight years ago.

The famous photo, taken in London in 2016, depicts the actor looking tired and thoughtful while wearing a blue sweater and jeans, and holding a cigarette.

The image quickly became popular on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Reddit. It sparked a wave of funny captions about feeling defeated, and instantly became a famous meme featuring Ben Affleck.

During interviews for the 2016 movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a video surfaced showing Ben Affleck looking unhappy while his co-star, Henry Cavill, was responding to a question.

The video quickly became popular online, and YouTuber Sabconth created a funny parody of it. The parody combined the original video with critical review headlines and the song “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel.

I’ve definitely seen Ben Affleck play some really intense and serious roles over the years, but what I admire is that he never takes himself too seriously. He always seems to have a good sense of humor about everything, even the heavier stuff.

He told the Los Angeles Times in 2022 that he wasn’t bothered by the memes until his children started pointing them out.

I reached a point where how people saw me was so far from my true self that I stopped paying attention to what was being said about me.

He explained that things became harder as his children grew up and began using the internet. He even found humor in the viral “Sad Affleck” meme, noting that everyone feels down during promotional events like press junkets.

Then my kids see it, and I immediately worry they’ll think I’m deeply unhappy or that they need to be concerned about me. It’s a really difficult feeling.

Affleck and Garner separated in 2015 and finalized their divorce three years later.

Even though they are no longer together, the pair continue to work well as parents to their children.

In a March interview with GQ, Affleck talked about the experience of raising his kids with Jennifer Garner.

He shared that he feels fortunate to have a strong co-parenting relationship with Jennifer Garner, the mother of his children. They work together well and he describes her as wonderful.

Matt Damon also talked about how he and Jennifer have dealt with being famous while still raising their children with honesty.

Ben remembered that he and his ex-wife used to share a habit: noticing things displayed on supermarket shelves.

We’d point out that’s not always the case. If it were true, you’d have a lot of siblings – as many as there are stories about your mother being pregnant.

Affleck emphasized that he’s aware of what’s happening in his personal life, and, more importantly, his children are too.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez first dated from 2002 to 2004, then rekindled their relationship in 2021. They married in 2022, but later divorced in 2024.
