Look, as someone who’s seen a lot of Batmans, I have to say Zack Snyder really came out swinging for Ben Affleck. He didn’t just say Affleck was good – he declared him the best Bruce Wayne, period. It’s a bold statement, and it’s interesting to see a director so publicly backing one of his actors, especially given all the chatter around that version of the character.
What did Zack Snyder say about casting Ben Affleck as Batman?
Director Zack Snyder recently spoke with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film was Ben Affleck’s first time playing Batman, and the casting choice remains a topic of discussion among fans.
Before choosing Affleck for the part, Snyder had to be sure it was the right fit. It all began with a simple photo.
Snyder explained that he created a quick sketch to visualize an idea. He took a photocopy of Ben Affleck’s face and simply drew Batman’s cowl on top of it with a Sharpie. He admitted it wasn’t sophisticated, but it helped him see how the character might look.
Once Snyder sketched out the initial concept art, it became clear that Ben Affleck was his choice for Batman. Snyder especially felt Affleck would perfectly capture the character’s dual nature as both a wealthy public figure and a masked vigilante, and he continues to stand by that decision.
According to Snyder, Ben Affleck is the most natural fit for the role of Bruce Wayne, better than any other actor who has played Batman. He believes Affleck embodies the character of Bruce Wayne more convincingly than anyone else.
When Zack Snyder was figuring out his vision for Batman, Ben Affleck just naturally fit the bill. His build and overall look were exactly what Snyder had in mind for the character, which was a huge part of why he was cast. As a longtime fan, it was great to see someone who physically embodied the Dark Knight take on the role.
Snyder described his ideal Batman as physically imposing, explaining, ‘He’s a genuinely large guy—6’5” in his boots.’ He always envisioned Batman as a powerful fighter and wanted this version to be noticeably strong and capable of inflicting serious damage. He specifically wanted him to be ‘thick’ and a true ‘brawler,’ even focusing on building that physicality into the suit and body design.
As soon as Snyder saw the image he’d created of Affleck as Batman, he knew Affleck was perfect for the part. All that remained was getting Affleck to agree to play the legendary character.
It wasn’t easy getting everyone on board at first,” Snyder explained. “But after a few discussions with Ben [Affleck], I felt he understood my vision for Batman and really cared about bringing it to life. He eventually said, ‘Okay, let’s go for it,’ and we were able to move forward.”
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is now streaming on HBO Max.
