Ben Affleck is a proud Boston native with a well-known love for Dunkin’ and all the city’s sports teams. He’s such a dedicated Red Sox fan that he famously refused to wear a New York Yankees hat during a scene in the 2014 film Gone Girl, which caused some problems on set. He still jokes about the incident, and it’s easy to understand why he wouldn’t budge!
So, I was reading about Ben Affleck promoting his new movie, The Rip – he was with Matt Damon, Sasha Calle, and Catalina Sandino Moreno. They were doing this fun game where they’d ask a question and everyone had to guess if it fit Ben or Matt better. They decided Ben was the bigger Red Sox fan, and then someone asked, “Which one of you wouldn’t wear a Yankees cap, even for a movie?” It just reminded me of that whole Gone Girl media frenzy, you know?
In a video posted on Instagram, Damon started telling a story about turning down a movie role. Affleck interrupted, and Damon then jokingly said that Affleck had halted the entire production just because he wouldn’t be in it. Affleck admitted the story has become a bit exaggerated, but then went on to explain what really happened.
The director ended the discussion by demanding I wear that item. I then had to explain why it wouldn’t work.
In the movie Gone Girl, Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, a teacher whose wife, Amy (played by Rosamund Pike), mysteriously vanishes. The story reveals that Nick and Amy used to live in New York City and later moved back to Nick’s home state of Missouri, which is why his character was originally supposed to wear a New York Yankees cap. Affleck objected to this detail, and filming was temporarily halted until the issue was resolved. You can hear Affleck describe the situation himself in the video below.

As a sports enthusiast, I understand how strong team loyalty can be. Considering the historic rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox, it wasn’t a shock to me that Ben Affleck wouldn’t wear a Yankees cap. He and the director eventually agreed he’d wear a New York Mets hat while filming. That really shows how dedicated Affleck is to the Red Sox, but just last year, he and Jennifer Garner even took their children to a Red Sox game, further proving his allegiance.

The trailer for Netflix’s ‘The Rip’ brings Matt Damon and Ben Affleck together again in what appears to be their most gripping and action-packed film to date – a thrilling police story.
David Fincher’s Gone Girl is still considered one of his best movies, and many film fans remain fascinated by how it was made. Recently, in 2025, Rosamund Pike shared that she was initially anxious about taking on the role, but Tom Cruise helped boost her confidence. Ultimately, Pike’s performance was highly praised, and she even received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
It’s good the issue with the Yankees hat was resolved, and it really shows how seriously people take their favorite sports teams – it’s become a funny story! As a big Celtics fan myself, I know I’d struggle to wear Lakers clothing, even if I had to.
You can watch Ben Affleck in the new movie The Rip on Netflix starting January 16th. And if you’re interested, his film Gone Girl is currently available to purchase or rent online.
