Ben Affleck Doubts Kevin Costner Remembers Their ‘Field of Dreams’ Days

Prior to becoming globally recognized celebrities, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were simply two aspiring actors in Cambridge, Massachusetts, striving for a chance in the industry. Consequently, they accepted any opportunity that came their way, one of which was working as extras in Kevin Costner’s 1989 hit sports drama, Field of Dreams. The term “memorable” is significant here because while Costner often recalls Affleck and Damon sitting in the stands at Fenway Park as uncredited extras, the stars of The Accountant 2 have disputed this claim.

Discussing their guest spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live recently, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon talked about their role in Field of Dreams. They mentioned how they landed the job due to being serious actors from a young age, maintaining connections with a local casting director who informed them about upcoming projects. As a result, they often worked as extras, eventually catching the attention of Costner in his iconic sports film. However, Affleck jokingly remarked that Kevin Costner is just being gracious when he claims to recall spotting them on set.

Kevin appears thoughtful, complimenting us by claiming he recalls us, possibly because we weren’t particularly memorable. Truth be told, we might have been more irritating than endearing, if you catch my drift. The crowd was quite large that day. It’s a nice gesture on his part to say so, but I suspect he remembers the actors with speaking roles instead.

Affleck asserts that while Costner might not recall their encounter, the actor vividly remembers his initial meeting with Costner, who was then basking in the success of films like Bull Durham, The Untouchables, and No Way Out. Affleck described it as a divine experience, stating “It felt like seeing a deity, especially alongside James Earl Jones. It was like being on a movie set, it was surreal. We even got to be at Fenway Park for two days. Everything about it seemed so grand.

Ben Affleck Shines in ‘The Accountant 2’

Regardless of whether Costner recalls Affleck and Damon, the two actors have undeniably ascended to stardom in Hollywood. This weekend, Affleck returns to the big screen in “The Accountant 2,” a highly anticipated sequel to his and Jon Bernthal’s 2016 action blockbuster. The movie has garnered positive reviews from critics so far, earning a Certified Fresh rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences, however, have shown even greater enthusiasm, pushing its Popcornmeter to an impressive 92%.

Currently, Costner is continuing his efforts to produce the rest of the Western series “Horizon,” following the financial struggles of Part 1. Whether we’ll eventually witness the remaining three parts remains uncertain, as a decision regarding their release has yet to be made.

Currently showing in theaters nationwide is “The Accountant 2” where you can find Affleck, and for a dose of nostalgia, watch “Field of Dreams” over the weekend on Netflix. The initial part of Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” is up now on Max.
