Meghan McCain publicly criticized Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s daughter after the teenager spoke about mask mandates at the United Nations. McCain specifically referred to the daughter as a ‘nepo baby,’ a term for someone who benefits from family connections.
This week, at an event focused on improving indoor air quality, the 19-year-old activist discussed the continued importance of wearing masks and taking other precautions, even though it’s been over five years since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
A Yale freshman at Davenport College caused a stir by stating that continued mask-wearing is necessary to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Violet stated that failing to protect children, and then admitting it to them, is a terrible betrayal. She explained it as telling a child, ‘We had the ability to keep you safe, but we chose not to,’ which is a deeply damaging thing to say.
Meghan McCain, a former cohost of The View and political commentator, responded to comments made by Violet by calling them ‘absurd’ in a post on X (formerly Twitter). McCain, who is the daughter of the late Senator John McCain, has since deleted the post.
She wrote: ‘Every single thing about all of this is why people hate nepo babies so much.

‘She has no business speaking at the UN and what she is speaking about is patently absurd.’
McCain quickly removed her initial post, but then responded to those who accused her of hypocrisy for calling Violet a ‘nepo baby.’ She then went on to call the teenager ‘insane’ for what she said.
She acknowledged being a ‘nepo baby’ – someone who benefits from family connections – and pointed out this was evident in her social media profile. While open to criticism, she emphasized her parents wouldn’t have allowed her to speak at the United Nations at age 19 about a health topic she knew nothing about, highlighting a double standard.
Being the child of famous people has both advantages and disadvantages, and if you choose to be in the public eye, you have to accept the criticism that comes with it – something I’ve always done. Also, I strongly disagree with the idea of keeping my children masked indefinitely, and I’m entitled to my opinion. Have a good day.
Violet, a student at an Ivy League school, observed that many people seem to be quickly forgetting the lessons learned during the pandemic, acting as if things are back to normal despite the recent months spent isolating at home. She finds this lack of caution concerning.
Violet explained to the audience that the push to return to normal life for adults has involved overlooking, minimizing, and hiding two important facts: how easily the virus spreads through the air, and the ongoing danger of long-term health problems after a COVID-19 infection. She suggested this happened through a series of decisions made by those in charge.

Last year, a teenager gained attention after publicly calling for hospitals and clinics to require masks. She explained that her request stemmed from a health problem she developed after a viral infection in 2019.
Photos taken by the paparazzi frequently show the oldest daughter of the famous family wearing a mask at events, sometimes even when no one else is.
I’m a big fan of this young activist and how she uses fashion as a powerful way to share her beliefs. I remember seeing photos last year of her wearing a mask and a black sweater with a watermelon on it – it was such a striking image, and a clear show of support for Palestine. It really resonated with me.
After a photo of the shirt went viral, orders flooded in for Wear the Peace, a clothing company based in Chicago, forcing them to quickly bring on additional employees.
A few months later, she was spotted in a pink summer dress and a mask, reading a book called *The Viral Underclass* by Steven W. Thrasher. The book explores the impact of inequality and disease on people’s lives.
This book explores how unequal access to healthcare around the world is connected to the way HIV is treated, specifically focusing on how race influences policing and criminalization related to the disease.
In 2022, she and her mother attended a state dinner at the White House, hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, for visiting French President Emmanuel Macron. It was a very stylish event.
Violet has expressed her feelings about her parents’ divorce from Jennifer Lopez through her clothing choices.

Last summer, she was seen in a Dolce & Gabbana dress previously worn by her stepmother, age 56, on a Valentine’s Day date with Ben. This was just before her stepmother’s brief marriage ended.
The teenager apparently became very close to the singer, even spending a vacation with her in the Hamptons despite the fact that her father had cut ties with her.
Speaking at the UN, Violet powerfully stated that we are losing our present moment as it happens.
She explained that young people haven’t had genuine options or enough information about the decisions being made on their behalf.
The Yale student concluded her speech by arguing that clean air should be considered a basic human right, just as we commonly recognize clean water as essential.
We can build clean air systems that are everywhere and so essential, future generations won’t even understand why we ever had to worry about polluted air.
In May, Violet published an article in Yale Global Health Review detailing how Los Angeles addressed both the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.
Violet believes we can truly get rid of the virus by consistently wearing masks, ensuring workers have paid sick leave and access to healthcare for everyone, and protecting the environment to maintain clean air.
She encouraged everyone to keep things tidy and give away masks to those who need them.

Just as people mindful of COVID and those with disabilities celebrate every time a chain of infection is stopped, climate scientists view each fraction of a degree of warming prevented as a win, Violet explained in her article.
If we want to achieve the desired outcome, we all need to connect with the people, strategies, and values that will make it happen.
Last year, Violet addressed the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, urging them to address the ongoing challenges of long COVID and proposing changes for the future.
Violet asked the board to provide masks, improved air filtration systems, and Far-UVC lighting in all government buildings, such as jails and medical facilities, and to require mask-wearing in county medical centers.
During the July 2024 meeting, Violet explained that laws preventing required mask-wearing put vulnerable people at greater risk and limit everyone’s ability to fully engage in Los Angeles life.
She explained that this will likely worsen our city’s homelessness problem and cause more hardship for many residents. It will disproportionately impact communities of color, people with disabilities, seniors, transgender individuals, women, and those working essential public-facing jobs.
Violet urged government leaders to stock up on protective gear like masks and gloves, preparing for a possible future pandemic.
Honestly, Violet is SO right! We absolutely *need* more free, good testing and treatment – it’s the least they can do! But the thing that really gets me fired up is this: the county *has* to fight those ridiculous mask bans, no matter what! She said it perfectly – masks don’t make things worse, they *help* keep people safe, and these bans are just… infuriating! I’m just so glad someone is finally saying what we all know!
