Beloved Scream Queen Offers “Exceptional” Update on Long-Awaited Sequel to Cult Horror Hit

I’m so excited about the potential sequel to It Follows! Maika Monroe, who was amazing in the first film, has said that the script by David Robert Mitchell is incredible and really takes the story in a new direction. While nothing’s official yet, there’s buzz that they might actually start filming next year, and that just makes me even more hopeful!

The actress is currently promoting a new version of the classic ’90s thriller, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which you can watch on Hulu. While at a recent movie premiere, she told Discussing Film that she’s now read the script for They Follow. Here’s what she had to say about the upcoming horror sequel:

I loved the script as soon as I read it. It’s a fresh take on the original story. The first version felt a bit over-the-top and dramatic, but this one feels much more realistic and down-to-earth.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting any news on They Follow, but it’s been quiet for a while now. It sounds like David Robert Mitchell is still working on Flowervale Street, which is also being kept pretty under wraps, and unfortunately got delayed. But, in a recent interview with Decider, producer Monroe did mention they’re hoping to start filming next year, and he called Mitchell’s script “exceptional,” so that’s a little bit of good news!

We’re hearing talk about a potential project next year. Everyone’s been occupied, but the script is fantastic. I truly believe this movie needs to be made – I think fans will absolutely love it, it’s really something special.

Can ‘They Follow’ Match the Success of the 2014 Horror Hit?

David Robert Mitchell has a challenging job: following up on the success of the popular horror film. The first movie featured a group of young people fighting a frightening and unpredictable enemy. This threat spread through something like a supernatural sexually transmitted disease, but the film deliberately left its origins and physical form unexplained. And honestly, it didn’t need to provide those details.

The shift from referring to the entity as “it” to “they” hints at Mitchell’s vision for the sequel and suggests the entity has evolved. While he’ll likely touch on elements that made the first movie so effective, it’s important he doesn’t just retell the same story with the same characters. Fortunately, Mitchell is known for his originality and has a strong reputation in horror and other genres, so we’re confident he’ll deliver something impressive.

Monroe has given us a glimpse of what to expect in the sequel, and it sounds promising! The story will continue to follow the two women, focusing on their emotional struggles. Mitchell is adding new twists and turns, making it sound like a thrilling continuation of the first film. Hopefully, it won’t be long before we can experience the suspense again.
