Beloved Housos star dies as creator Paul Fenech pays tribute
Oh, Maret Archer! The very mention of her name brings a twinkle to my eye and warmth to my heart. I grew up with Beryl, her iconic character from Housos, as an integral part of my life. Her comedic timing was unparalleled, and her ability to portray the quintessential Aussie mum was simply unmatched.
Housos star Maret Archer has died at the age of 75.
Paul Fenech, the show’s creator, announced the unfortunate news through a heartfelt Instagram post on Friday, expressing his respect and fond memories of his past acting partner.
Maret became particularly renowned for her role as Beryl, the mother of character Darren Smith (played by Jason Davis), in the widely acclaimed satirical comedy show created by Paul.
Additionally, she returned to her cherished character in both Housos vs Authority and Fat Pizza vs Housos spin-off series.
As reported in the Sydney Morning Herald’s obituary, Maret passed away peacefully on September 2, enveloped in love.
This week on Instagram, Paul paid homage by saying: ‘Farewell Maret. There will never be another like you on Australian television who portrayed the role of an authentic Aussie mom so beautifully!’
Additionally, among the pictures of Maret, Paul included this comment: “She was a robust, amusing lady with an exceptional wit. On the set, everyone cherished collaborating with her.
‘Have a good thought or prayer for her. Rest in peace Maret.’
Many fans swiftly expressed their sympathy for Maret’s passing by pouring out a multitude of heartfelt condolences on his post.
I’m deeply saddened by her passing. She truly mastered every role she took on, making her a dream collaborator. Among all the greats, she stood out as one of my favorites.
Another said: ‘How sad 🙁 condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.’
A third commented: ‘Aww… she was brilliant as Beryl. Absolutely brilliant. RIP Maret and sorry for the loss of your colleague and friend.’
While a fourth penned: ‘RIP to Beryl thanks for the laughs, safe travels to heaven.’
Additionally, I’m sorry to hear this, Pauly. My heart goes out to her dear family at this difficult time.

Maret made a memorable appearance on the show “Housos,” which is a satirical imitation depicting the lives of a group of Australian residents residing in the fictitious town of Sunnyvale, New South Wales.
In 2014, the series won the Logie Award for Most Outstanding Light Entertainment Program.
Apart from Housos, Paul is also known for creating another popular Australian sitcom on SBS, titled Fat Pizza, with Rebel Wilson in the cast.
