I was amazed to learn that a Game of Thrones actor almost landed a part in Andor! It’s wild to think how close things can be to turning out differently – a small change could have completely altered the show as we know it.
Who did Rory McCann nearly play in Andor?
Rory McCann is famous for his role as Sandor Clegane, The Hound, in Game of Thrones. After the show ended, he hoped to join the cast of a Star Wars project.
Actor McCann was originally cast as Brasso, a character who knows Cassian and lives on the planet Ferrix, in the first season of Andor. However, an unexpected injury forced McCann to leave the show, and Joplin Sibtain took over the role.
On the Star Wars Sessions podcast, Sibtain discussed his experience working on Andor, explaining he was initially hired for a minor part. He then shared that another actor, McCann, had to unexpectedly leave the production.
According to Sibtain, McCann had a limp but continued to work. A scan revealed a serious issue, and a doctor warned him that he would likely lose the ability to walk if he didn’t have surgery.
With McCann out, Sibtain was offered a chance to read for the role of Brasso.
Sibtain explained that they re-filmed some scenes. A lot of work went into digitally replacing his face with that of The Hound’s character.
Initially, McCann didn’t get a role in Star Wars, but that changed unexpectedly. After the tragic passing of Ray Stevenson in May 2023 at age 58, McCann was offered the part of Baylan Skoll in Ahsoka Season 2, stepping into Stevenson’s role. Rather than eliminate the character, the show decided to recast it with McCann.
McCann believes continuing the character’s story after Stevenson’s departure is the best course of action, rather than ending it abruptly. They’ve successfully handled similar situations in the past, and McCann is optimistic that fans will accept the change, promising to give it their full effort.
Ahsoka Season 2 has no release date.
