Beloved Disney+ Show Gets Major Season 3 Announcement

Starting August 8, the third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently in production, making it unique as it initiates filming for Season 3 before the broadcast of Season 2 on Disney+, marking a first for live-action Disney+ original series.

Among Disney+’s original live-action shows, “The series based on Rick Riordan’s novels” is one of just three to have been renewed for a third season. The other two are “The Mandalorian” and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

In both instances, filming for Season 3 started several months after the release of Season 2. For instance, The Mandalorian’s second season came out in October 2020, and filming for the third didn’t commence until late 2022. Similarly, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series released its second season in May 2021, with production on Season 3 starting in January 2022.

By late August 2025, production for Season 3 of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” was already underway, while viewers won’t be able to stream Season 2 until December 10th on Disney+. Interestingly, news about Season 3 was shared just a few weeks after Season 2 wrapped up its production, with the scriptwriting for the third season starting even before that.

The third season of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” a live-action Disney+ original series, did not start when Disney+ initially launched, unlike shows like “The Mandalorian” and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” which premiered their first seasons on the same day. These latter two shows began with the introduction of Disney+ on November 12, 2019.

The third season of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” will follow the narrative from the third Percy Jackson book, “The Titan’s Curse.” Returning cast members Walker Scobell, Aryan Simhadri, and Leah Sava Jeffries will be joined by new additions Levi Chrisopulos and Olive Abercrombie, who will portray the beloved DiAngelo siblings.

Percy Jackson Season 3’s Production Start Bodes Well for Show’s Future

Starting the production for Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 3, well ahead of the airing of Season 2, might hint at Disney’s optimism about the success of Season 2 and their readiness to further invest in the series as it progresses.

Prior to the debut of Season 1, Rick Riordan, both the executive producer and author of the source novel, encouraged fans to demonstrate their investment in Season 2 by first watching Season 1. Following the conclusion of Season 1, news of Season 2 quickly followed, with the show being praised for its critical and financial success across the board.

In other words, the fact that Disney announced Season 3 before Season 2’s release indicated that they had sufficient confidence in the show’s success, suggesting they didn’t necessarily need viewer feedback to decide on its continuation.

Even though a ‘go ahead’ signal and the commencement of production are distinct events, it’s important to note that canceling a season after it has been announced is unlikely. However, terminating a season prior to its filming offers significant cost savings and reduces risk, making it a more financially prudent decision.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about the news that production for Season 3 of my favorite show is already underway, even before the release of Season 2! This shows that Disney has full faith in the quality of Season 2, a confidence that Riordan himself has hinted at. It’s clear they are willing to make the necessary financial commitment for its continuation, which only reinforces my anticipation for the upcoming seasons.

It’s clear that Riordan emphasized the need for immediate start of Season 3 production right from the outset of development. While he didn’t provide specific details, it’s plausible that this urgency stems from the fact that Seasons 2 and 3 are intended to occur just a few months apart. Starting production early would help ensure a more authentic portrayal of the short time gap between the two seasons.

Fans of the original Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series are optimistic that seasons 4 and 5 might be commissioned in the future as well, given Disney’s apparent confidence in the success of season 2.

However, it’s uncertain when Disney might formally reveal them due to their ongoing deliberations, as there appears to be no pressing deadline akin to that for Season 3.

Should the series proceed into its fifth season, it will become the initial live-action Disney+ series to reach this benchmark, as for now, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series remains the sole one that has completed four seasons in total.
