Beloved Channel Seven star quits the network after 41 years: ‘The end of an incredible chapter’

He has been telling Tasmanians which way the wind blows for decades.

After 41 years as a weatherman, Peter Murphy is retiring.

Oh my gosh, you guys, I’m completely obsessed with him! He’s seriously a legend – he’s been bringing us the weather on Channel Seven for longer than anyone else *ever* in Australian TV history! It’s amazing, he’s just a total icon!

Peter announced his retirement on Wednesday, saying he felt fortunate to have had such a long and successful career.

He said in a statement that it has been a wonderful experience connecting with people in Tasmania each evening.

The weather really shapes life here, and I’ve always wanted to acknowledge that while also keeping things lighthearted and enjoyable.

He added that the weather in Tasmania is quite changeable, the job has been a memorable experience, and the people he worked with made it all worthwhile.

Peter immediately thanked his wife, Donna, who he’s been with for 33 years. They met when his career was first taking off.

‘My wife Donna, of course, has been along for the entire period as well and no doubt is looking forward to spending every waking moment of every day with me from now on,’ he said.

Peter also highly commended the 7News Tasmania team, saying their presenters are award-worthy.

He said he’s especially grateful to have worked with such a successful news team for so long.

Kim Millar and Jo Palmer deserve recognition for their resilience and strength in facing many challenges over the years.

News director Gavin McDougall praised Peter as a highly skilled and dedicated professional who had a lasting positive impact on Tasmania.

Gavin described Peter Murphy as being more than just someone who reports the weather; he’s become a beloved part of life in Tasmania.

‘His commitment, professionalism and connection with viewers have set an extremely high standard.

‘His departure marks the end of an incredible chapter in our television history.’

As a long-time viewer, I was so moved by Gavin’s words about Peter. He really hit the nail on the head – Peter built something truly special in local television. It wasn’t just about the shows, it was about being a constant, trustworthy presence and genuinely connecting with all of us in the community. That’s a legacy that will last.

For the past 40 years, Peter hasn’t just been a familiar face on Tasmanian television; he’s also been a well-known and active member of the community, hosting events like New Year’s Eve parties, race days, and award shows.

Peter will deliver his final broadcast on Monday, September 22nd, before passing his role to Kiah Wicks, who currently presents the weekend weather.

Kiah expressed her excitement about the new job, but also acknowledged she had a lot to live up to.

I’ve dreamed of this job since I was a little girl. It’s impossible to truly replace someone as iconic as Murph, but I’m excited to bring my own expertise in weather to the role, she explained.

Peter began his broadcasting career on local radio in Moree, New South Wales. In 1982, he relocated to Tasmania and started working at station 7EX.

Two years after the move, Peter began presenting the weather on TNT9 and the rest is history.

Outside of his public life, Peter married Donna in 1992, and they had two sons, Jack and Lewis.
