Beloved “brilliant” BBC sitcom spin-off branded “a rarity” is coming to Netflix

Fans in the UK will soon be able to watch the BBC comedy Amandaland on Netflix. The show, which started as a spin-off from the popular series Motherland (already available on Netflix, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer), will be available on Netflix starting Thursday, March 12th.

Amandaland centers around Amanda Hughes, played by Lucy Punch, who is navigating life after a divorce. She’s moved from the affluent area of Chiswick to South Harlesden and is now raising her two teenage children, which presents a whole new set of challenges.

The show currently consists of one season with six episodes, plus a Christmas special that brought Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders, her co-star from Absolutely Fabulous, back together.

Thankfully a second season is on the way, although we don’t know when it will release just yet.

Viewers on IMDb give the show an average rating of 7.4 out of 10, with many praising it as a rare successful spin-off. However, some feel it doesn’t quite measure up to the original series.

Fans are enjoying seeing more of Joanna Lumley. Many commented that both Amanda and Felicity become increasingly endearing throughout the spin-off. One viewer noted that while Amanda isn’t meant to be particularly likable, the show reveals glimpses of her vulnerability and desire for affection, moving beyond her polished exterior. They also praised Lucy Punch’s performance, calling her brilliant.

One viewer had a clever idea for how to watch the show: see it as a collection of funny scenes focusing on – not just parents, but specifically families in the UK who are comfortably middle class, and sometimes even a bit wealthier.

Writers Holly Walsh and Laurence Rickard expressed their excitement about returning to write the second season, set in South Harlesden, calling it a ‘joy’.

We’ve spent the last six months learning about Brent Council’s rules on illegal dumping, practicing an Irish accent for a character, and writing the script. Now we’re thrilled to finally start filming with our fantastic actors!

We’re hoping to find out when season 2 will be released soon, and we think adding it to Netflix could attract even more viewers.

Amandaland can be streamed on BBC iPlayer and will come to Netflix on 12 March.
