As an ardent autodidact in music, my significant opportunity came knocking in 1958 when I was invited by the seasoned Australian rock maestro, Johnny O’Keefe, to join his band, The Dee Jays, for a nationwide tour.
For five years straight, Bertles amazed crowds across Australia by showcasing his exceptional saxophone talents, playing side-by-side with the nation’s initial rock icon.
Afterward, he became a member of the Australian R&B band Max Merritt & The Meteors and performed alongside them in Australia and England during the late 1960s.
During his distinguished career, Bertles had the privilege of performing alongside many well-known artists, such as Cliff Richard, Alan Price, and Cilla Black.
In the early 1980s, Bertles encountered his future spouse, Nancy Hayes, during a theater performance of the musical “Chicago,” where he was part of the band. A deep affection blossomed between them, leading to their eventual marriage.
In the course of their professional journeys, they stood by each other, and in 1998, he made an appearance on Nancye’s edition of Channel Nine’s “This is your Life.” During this show, he shared with the host, Mike Munro, the story of how their bond developed.
From the moment I saw her, I knew I was smitten. After a while, we decided to share a home, and after an amusing 14 years together, she playfully proposed the question, ‘Will you marry me?’
Throughout her illustrious acting career, spanning numerous television series and films like Blue Heelers, House Husbands, Annie, and Home and Away, Bertles was consistently by his wife’s side.
He released his first jazz solo album in 1995 called Rhythm of the Heart.
It was nominated for Best Jazz Album at the 1996 ARIA Awards.
In his later life, the lively performer didn’t completely retire and instead joined an esteemed Australian jazz group known as Ten Part Invention.
