Bella Ramsey’s Autism Revelation and Sexuality Exploration in British Vogue Shoot

Bella Ramsey has shared that they received an autism diagnosis while filming HBO’s The Last of Us, which took place from June 2021 to July 2022.

A 21-year-old British actor, who identifies as gender fluid and non-binary and prefers the use of “they/them” pronouns, has previously discussed their neurodivergence but had not wanted to reveal their official diagnosis until now for some reason.

During a gritty photo session for British Vogue, Bella, known for her role as Ellie in the post-apocalyptic series, shared that she was identified as having autism while working on the first season of The Last of Us.

Autism is a long-term condition, developing from birth, which influences an individual’s experience of the world and their social interactions.

They informed the publication: ‘I found the diagnosis liberating; it allows me to move through life with a greater self-compassion as I navigate the daily tasks that others seem to find effortless.’

In my own words, I find the label of being autistic extremely beneficial as it helps me comprehend myself better. However, when it comes to my gender and sexuality, I don’t feel at ease with labels since they make me feel like I’m confining myself in a limited space, and I end up feeling restricted.

In 2022, Bella publicly identified as non-binary and shared that navigating this journey under public scrutiny has been challenging, because unlike many others, they can’t enjoy the luxury of privately discovering and expressing their identity.

A significant aspect of acting involves having a response for any query directed at you. However, it’s essential to understand that sometimes the appropriate reply might be: “I’m not sure and I’d prefer not to discuss that matter right now.

Bella went on to say: ‘Should I wish to delve into different aspects of my gender expression, I would do so openly.’

Even though I’d prefer to maintain privacy, should someone recognize me on the street and take my picture, especially if I’m dressed differently, it’s likely that conversation about the incident will ensue.

Bella typically donned a chest binder about 90% of the time while filming the show, set amidst a worldwide pandemic causing the afflicted to become undead-like beings.

In an interview with G2 UK, Bella explained how her flexible self-identity affected her performance as Ellie, and she felt that wearing a binder assisted her in concentrating better while on set.

‘Which probably isn’t healthy,’ they said. ‘Like, please bind safely’

In addition, Bella openly discussed her own gender identity with her fellow actor Pedro Pascal, who has a transgender sister.

In simpler terms, they shared that their talks weren’t just serious all the time; they also had moments of laughter and humor. They maintained an honest and open relationship throughout.

What irks me more than debates over pronouns is being referred to as a ‘young woman’ or a ‘strong young woman,’ ‘young lady,’ yet I don’t identify with those labels.

What really gets under my skin isn’t just the argument about pronoun usage, it’s being addressed as a ‘young woman’ or a ‘powerful young woman,’ ‘young lady.’ However, I don’t see myself in those terms.

As I step into the limelight this month, I’m excited to share that I’ve been fortunate enough to forge a special connection with the talented Maisy Stella, who’s only just turned twenty. It’s a delightful phase in my life, and I’m looking forward to seeing where this relationship takes us both.

Maisy posted a heartfelt message on Instagram to celebrate Bella’s 21st birthday, accompanied by a cozy photo of the two friends.

Additionally, there was a snapshot showing Bella admiring her phone while expressing enthusiasm over how stunning the celebrity looks.

She labeled the post as, “Most beautiful, happiest birthday ever to the coolest, coziest, most marvelous person one could imagine.

There was much talk among fans that the two might be romantically involved, a suspicion strengthened by the frequent playful remarks made by The Last of Us actor on Stella’s social media posts.

In 2023, Bella chose infrequent moments to discuss their sexual orientation, revealing in an interview with British Vogue that they do not identify strictly as heterosexual.

‘I’m a little bit wavy, you know? That’s what I like to say.’

On dating they added: ‘I’m 19, so figuring that out’s gonna be a part of my life. 

”The intricacies of relationships can be challenging enough on their own, but when your life is under scrutiny, the constant opinions from others only make it more complex and difficult to navigate.”

Additionally, they acknowledged their concern about being perceived as following a trend rather than genuinely identifying as non-binary prior to their public announcement.

They shared that it’s a concise method to tell others about themselves. Now, they can express it better. Being referred to as ‘they’ feels the most authentic and true to their identity, which is who they are at heart.
