Bella Ramsey Reveals How Autism Diagnosis Boosted Their Acting Career
Among Hollywood stars, only a few actors have publicly discussed being on the autism spectrum. Bella Ramsey from “The Last of Us” is contributing to making it more acceptable to be part of this global community, estimated to number over 60 million individuals. After disclosing their diagnosis during the video game adaptation’s production, Ramsey has now explained why they feel that having autism aids their acting abilities.
During the filming of Season 1 of “The Last of Us,” they received their diagnosis following inspiration from a crew member with an autistic daughter, who prompted them to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. After receiving the diagnosis, they shared with British Vogue that it validated something they had “often pondered” about themselves.
In Ramsey’s latest interview with Them, here’s how they talked about it further:
In acting, I’m learning to read the subtle cues from people’s faces and emotions, the words they choose and the way they deliver them, as well as the underlying feelings that drive minor facial tics or mouth movements. I soak up this information like a sponge and have an extensive understanding of what it feels like to be various individuals just by observing them.
In the recent interview, they further elaborated on their diagnosis, revealing that they possess an exceptional ability to perceive details, which translates into a heightened sensitivity towards other people’s emotions, subtle facial expressions, and non-verbal cues.
Previously, the actor from “Game of Thrones” discussed how their diagnosis allowed them to understand and accept feelings of mismatch and discomfort they experienced during their school years and also in relation to certain sensory experiences, like disliking wearing warm clothing on set in Canada.
Performing arts suit them well due to their affinity for routines, as working on a film set aligns perfectly. For Ramsey, receiving an autism diagnosis has been liberating, enabling them to move through life more compassionately towards themselves.

According to UCLA Health, approximately 80% of individuals who were assigned female at birth remain undiagnosed by age 18. A diagnosis is crucial because it provides an understanding for symptoms experienced, offers additional resources and support, and boosts confidence when navigating social situations with autism.
Apart from being diagnosed with autism, this versatile actor, identifying as non-binary, has openly shared their views on the issue of gendered award categories and the unexpected fame they received due to their performance in The Last Of Us.
After wrapping up my role as the leading star in The Last of Us Season 2, I’m thrilled to see where my journey goes next, having just completed the finale. Being a 21-year-old British actor, I can’t wait to unveil what’s in store for me in the future!
Since it’s not common for actors to discuss autism, many more individuals may find Ramsey’s remarks intriguing. If they can identify with the actor’s personal experience, they might feel inspired to learn more about this condition.
