Bella Hadid Defies Cannes’ New Dress Code
She has made headlines in recent years with her racy sheer dresses.
Instead of her usual bold outfits, Bella Hadid chose a more traditional style for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival opening ceremony red carpet on Tuesday.
At the premiere of “Leave One Day,” the 28-year-old showcased her fresh, striking blonde hairdo in a sleek black dress featuring a high slit that reached her thigh.
Instead of wearing extravagant gowns like past years at Cannes, due to the prohibition of provocative or overly large dresses, Bella opted not to wear a bra when posing in her dress, which featured a daring side split.
Despite various circumstances, Bella nevertheless shone brilliantly in her snug gown, drawing attention to her long, slender legs with the daring side slit.
As she gracefully walked along the crimson carpet, it was evident that this was her inaugural stroll among numerous appearances at this year’s festival.

In 2021, at the screening of Tre Piani (Three Floors), Bella opted for a low-cut black dress, showcasing her neckline.
Three years on, she repeated a comparable daring move at the 2024 gala. The audience was left spellbound when she appeared at the premiere of “The Apprentice,” Donald Trump’s biopic, wearing nothing but a braless, see-through brown evening gown.
Over the past few years, the Cannes Film Festival may have garnered more spotlight for the stylish attire of its famous attendees than for the list of movies shown on the Croisette.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the recent changes in the dress code at this year’s festival. These new nudity rules, supposedly for maintaining ‘decency,’ seem to be dampening the spirit of freedom that once characterized the event.
As reported by organizers, the stringent decision aims to curb the fashionable trend of revealing dresses among celebrities, which are characterized by having significantly more exposed areas than covered ones, on the red carpet.
As a conscientious attendee, I adhere to the guidelines set by the Cannes Festival which clearly state that out of respect for decorum, public nudity is not allowed on the red carpet or any other part of the festival.
At the festival, those who represent welcoming teams must enforce a rule that only people adhering to these guidelines are allowed on the red carpet.
A fresh set of policies, unexpectedly introduced in the latest festival attendees’ guideline – this was unveiled alongside specific expectations for public conduct during events.

Visitors should gather at the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière over a busy two-week period, where they will find some of the most prominent movie showcases taking place. This is all part of the Cannes event.
It’s clear that the well-known location has shifted towards a stricter dress code, favoring formal attire such as suits, tuxedos, and long evening gowns instead of attention-grabbing outfits.
You can wear formal options like little black dresses, cocktail dresses, pantsuits, fancy blouses, and either flat or high-heeled sandals at the event.
It’s unclear whether French TV broadcasters, cautious about showing nudity, might have influenced the initial application of this stricter policy.
Significant high-profile events such as the Cannes Film Festival are broadcast in France by France Télévisions.
Lately, the annual event has been drawing in a higher number of models and social media personalities rather than actors and movie creators. This shift has led to a rise in bold and daring fashion choices on the red carpet.
This year, the Cannes Film Festival is happening while President Trump has pledged to impose tariffs on foreign movies.
Cannes, a city that attracts filmmakers, dealers, and media personnel from various corners of the globe, is often referred to as the Olympic Games of cinema screens. It presents its own prestigious award, the Palme d’Or, at its conclusion.
Filmmakers hail from almost every part of the world to exhibit their movies, while negotiators tirelessly work throughout the night to market completed films or production packages to diverse regions.
According to Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, he plans to premiere his new thriller, “The Secret Agent,” in an atmosphere reminiscent of the Colosseum, as he returns to Cannes Film Festival with this production set against the backdrop of Brazil’s dictatorship.
Preparation is crucial as the experience can be quite intense, similar to the anticipation before stepping onto a roller coaster at the Palais.
Donald Trump stirred up a commotion within Hollywood and the global film industry by declaring, on May 4th, that films originating from foreign countries would be subjected to a 100% import tax.

The White House hasn’t made any definitive choices yet. They’re considering alternatives such as providing federal incentives to U.S. production companies instead of imposing tariffs. However, the statement serves as a reminder that global disputes can disrupt even the most established cultural pillars.
The Cannes Film Festival was initially established during the era of World War II, as a response to the rise of fascism in Italy, which caused the displacement of the Venice Film Festival that was under government control at the time.
Since then, Cannes’ unwavering dedication to cinema has turned it into a guiding light for filmmakers. Hordes of directors have flocked there to establish themselves.
2021 is no less unique, as some first-time filmmakers at Cannes have already gained recognition. Notably, Kristen Stewart (The Chronology of Water), Scarlett Johansson (Eleanor the Great) and Harris Dickinson (Urchin) are all set to premiere their directorial debuts in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes this year.
Several seasoned attendees will return, such as Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning), Robert De Niro, who is being honored with a Palme d’Or 49 years after Taxi Driver first screened at Cannes, and Quentin Tarantino. They will be there to honor low-budget Western director George Sherman.
This year, the eagerly awaited eighth and last part of the Mission Impossible series is scheduled to be among the initial premieres on the Cannes calendar, hosting its grand event on the red carpet on May 14th.
Meanwhile Scarlett’s directorial debut Eleanor The Great, will be unveiled on May 20.
Instead, due to his ongoing legal dispute with ex-co-star Blake Lively, it’s unlikely that Justin Baldoni will make an appearance.
