Sam Thompson is a well-known personality, famous for his cheerful attitude and appearances on shows like Made In Chelsea and I’m A Celebrity, as well as hosting his podcast, Staying Relevant.
Recently, the actor has been open with his fans about a new chapter in his life. In 2023, he was diagnosed with both ADHD and autism, and he’s been sharing his experiences since then.
Sam was approaching his 30th birthday and felt relieved to finally have a diagnosis. For years, he’d been labeled as lazy or a poor student, and the diagnosis helped explain those past struggles.
For ADHD Awareness Month, 32-year-old Sam shared his story with the charity ADHD UK. He hopes by talking about his diagnosis, he can help kids understand that ADHD can actually be a strength.
After my diagnosis, I felt compelled to get involved with a fantastic charity and become one of their ambassadors. Honestly, my biggest goal now is simply to raise as much money as possible for their incredible work. It’s become a real passion of mine.
He explained that receiving his diagnosis was surprisingly relieving. It lifted a huge burden and actually improved how he felt about himself.

‘I would like to bring as much attention to this as possible with whatever voice I have.’
I often tell children that focusing their energy is like having a superpower, and I truly believe it is. When someone with ADHD finds something they’re passionate about – whether it’s a school subject, a career path, or just a hobby – they can really thrive.
I truly believe everyone faces genuine challenges, and it’s all about finding a way to talk about them openly without feeling any shame. It’s a delicate balance, but so important for well-being. As someone who focuses on lifestyle and emotional health, I always encourage people to acknowledge their struggles and speak about them with self-compassion.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe it! Sam, after bravely sharing his diagnosis journey in that amazing Channel 4 documentary, took on *I’m A Celebrity*! And not only did he handle everything while openly talking about his ADHD, but he *won* the whole thing! I was screaming at the TV, honestly. He’s just… incredible!
The TV personality said he was really touched by the support he received after leaving the show, especially from people who, like him, are neurodivergent.
He was most surprised, after leaving the jungle, by the supportive community around neurodiversity and the impact a single conversation on national television had made.
Many parents told me after the show that their child had been embarrassed about having ADHD, but seeing that part on ‘I’m A Celebrity’ really changed how they thought about it.
It’s incredibly moving to think that a single conversation on TV could make such a positive difference in the lives of even a few young people. I’ve never experienced anything like that before – a feeling of connection with a community built around a shared impact. It’s completely clarified my purpose and what drives me now.

I think ADHD has given me some wonderful qualities. It’s shaped who I am, and I’m really proud of the person I’ve become because of it.
Oh my gosh, when Sam finally revealed his ADHD diagnosis, it just… made so much sense! He said he actually felt *relieved* to know why he struggled so much in school. He was so overwhelmed back then, he literally told me he used to cry while trying to do his homework, just sobbing into his textbooks! It broke my heart, but now it all clicks. He’s so brave for sharing, and I’m just so incredibly proud of him.
For ADHD Awareness Month and through his work with The King’s Trust, Sam visited Oaks Park Secondary School to talk to students about his own ADHD diagnosis and the condition in general.
When asked what advice he’d give his younger self, he responded by saying he’d want his younger self to know they weren’t alone in how they were feeling. He emphasized that many others shared the same feelings and that they were all going through it together.
For me, the best part of having ADHD is the incredible people I’ve connected with and the supportive community I’ve found – they’ve truly made a huge difference in my life.
I’ve met incredible people through my work with ADHD – both in person at events like shows at the O2, and online. Being part of the ADHD community, especially the one ADHD UK has built, is truly special, and I feel very fortunate to be included.
What I love most about having ADHD is the incredible support and connection within the community – everyone genuinely has each other’s backs.
‘The charity [ADHD UK] has helped so many people and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of it.’
Sam became well-known through the show Made In Chelsea, but he’s said he didn’t feel like his true self while filming it, due to challenges with ADHD. He’s only recently, in the last few years, started to feel genuinely happy.
Since learning about his health condition, Sam has received a lot of support from his close friend Pete Wicks. They even performed their live show, ‘Staying Relevant,’ together at London’s O2 Arena last month.
The story of how this duo achieved podcast success will be told in their new book, coming out in November.

In 2024, Sam became the official ambassador of ADHD UK after he was diagnosed at the age of 30.
The celebrity explained they’re hoping to start a discussion about ADHD to help shift public perception and understanding of the condition.
Sam posted a heartwarming video offering encouragement to two kids with ADHD, advising them to focus all their passion and effort on activities they truly enjoy.
During heartfelt conversations with her children, the TV personality emphasized that being neurodiverse is a strength, calling it a ‘superpower’.
Sam shared some exciting news on Instagram, announcing they’ve become an official ambassador for @ADHDUK.CO.UK. They expressed feeling honored by the opportunity.
This charity is a cause I deeply care about. Their slogan, ‘positively changing what it means to have ADHD in the UK,’ really resonates with me, especially as someone recently diagnosed with ADHD.
The charity focuses on five key areas: providing information, offering support, conducting research, advocating for change, and raising awareness. I’m hoping to use my own reach to contribute to all of these efforts.
I’m deeply committed to changing how people view ADHD and fostering open discussions about it. More than anything, I want to be remembered for helping to create a more understanding world for those with ADHD – that’s what truly matters to me.
Since leaving the jungle, I’ve received messages from many people – both kids and adults – who’ve told me I’ve helped them understand ADHD in a new way.
As someone passionate about well-being, I’m on a mission to connect with as many people as possible – particularly young folks – and really highlight the incredible strengths and beauty that come with being neurodiverse. It’s about celebrating different minds and showing everyone the magic within them!
It’s true that there will be difficulties, but with the right help, this can actually be a strength, a positive thing, and allow us to reach our goals.
Thank you to ADHDUK.CO.UK for everything you do to support people like me – I’m thrilled to be part of the team!
