Beetlejuice Beetlejuice first reactions land ahead of cinema release

I’ve been a fan of the original “Beetlejuice” for as long as I can remember, and I must say, watching the sequel was like stepping into a twisted, hilarious dream. The film feels like a perfect blend of old-school Burton zaniness and modern quirkiness – a delightful cocktail that’s hard to resist!

34 years after Tim Burton’s acclaimed first film, the spirit with extraordinary charm returns to our screens once more in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”

In the subsequent film (that is longer than its predecessor), we find three generations of the Deetz family returning to their home following an unforeseen incident. However, they aren’t the only ones coming back. When Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, unearths a model in the attic, it doesn’t take long before Betelgeuse reappears to stir up more mischief once again.

After the initial screening on August 28 at the Venice International Film Festival, a select group of viewers who’ve watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice have been active on Twitter/X, expressing their immediate thoughts and feedback.

So, does the sequel live up to the first movie?

In a post for The Mary Sue, Rachel Leishman expressed her amusement, saying: “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! Say it three times and you’ll find the sequel is out – #BeetlejuiceBeetlejuice. This oddball, eccentric movie is a delightful follow-up to the 1988 original. The incorporation of ‘MacArthur Park’ in the film instantly won me over, but having Michael Keaton reprise his role as Beetlejuice takes it to an exceptional level.”

“#Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice once more brings the fun back to life in this reanimated horror-comedy. It’s evident that director Tim Burton and the cast had a blast creating this film, which lives up to its eccentric, endearing, and darkly humorous reputation,” Mike Reyes of CinemaBlend noted. “With Beetlejuice back in action, it feels like we’ve stepped into familiar territory again.”

Despite boasting an impressive ensemble featuring big names and rising talents, it’s Catherine O’Hara who nearly steals the show in this film. The reunion of Catherine, Michael Keaton, and Winona Ryder serves as a perfect illustration of how to handle nostalgia effectively.

Eric Goldman offered a more subtle perspective on the sequel: “From a storyline standpoint, #Beetlejuice2 has some flaws (an excess of villain narratives, particularly). However, as a revisit to this universe and these characters, it was delightful. Burton, Keaton, Ryder, and O’Hara all seemed perfectly comfortable, and it successfully evoked the Beetlejuice atmosphere once more.”

“Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega seem to fit perfectly as mother and daughter, while Michael Keaton yet again excels in a role tailored for his talent. However, it’s Catherine O’Hara who steals the show this time with her hilarious performance.”

Back when it first graced our screens, I found myself utterly captivated by the delightful chaos that was “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Critics adored its whimsical, vintage Tim Burton weirdness and hailed it as a true masterpiece.

The beloved film “Beetlejuice” returns with the iconic Michael Keaton reprising his role, joined by Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. This time, Jenna Ortega portrays Lydia’s daughter, Astrid.

Additionally joining the cast are Justin Theroux playing Lydia’s partner Rory, Monica Bellucci as Delores – Betelgeuse’s former spouse, Willem Dafoe portraying the spirit detective Wolf Jackson, and Burn Gorman taking on the role of Father Damien, a reverend from Winter River.

A few weeks ago, Keaton shared his perspective on why he believes Beetlejuice 2 outperforms the original film. He pointed out that its narrative is more robust.

He pointed out that the viewers might find a stronger relationship among the other characters. He added that there were elements in it which took him by surprise, and these elements were incredibly pleasing.

Ryder stated, “I am extremely certain that it will surpass all expectations. In fact, not only did it meet my high standards, but I believe each generation will discover something within it that they will truly value.”

To refresh your memory about the film “Beetlejuice” prior to its sequel’s release next week, consider re-watching it on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video (UK version).

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is released in cinemas on September 6.
