Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ending explained: How does the long-awaited sequel end?

As a longtime fan of Tim Burton’s whimsical and macabre universe, I found the ending of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to be a delightful continuation of the original film’s quirky charm. The plot twists were intriguing, keeping me guessing until the very end.

As a gamer, I’d say that this new Beetlejuice sequel truly honored the spirit of the ’80s horror original – a rarity among sequels these days. Tim Burton was at the helm for this one, and it picks up decades after the first movie’s events. Lydia Deetz has grown into an adult, hosting a popular supernatural talk show called “Ghost House.” She’s also in a relationship with Rory, the show’s producer, and they have a teenager named Astrid. Unfortunately, Lydia still grapples with her complicated past involving the trickster ghost, Betelgeuse.

Following Delia’s revelation that their father Charles has passed away, Lydia, Delia, Astrid, and Rory travel back to Winter River, Connecticut to attend the funeral and tidy up their old home. However, events take an unexpected turn as they inadvertently open a gateway to the afterlife, leaving Lydia tasked with rescuing Astrid from the realm of the deceased. In her time of need, who does she reach out to for aid? None other than Betelgeuse, a trickster and bio-exorcist. Needless to say, matters become increasingly complicated when he gets involved.

Does Lydia rescue Astrid from the afterlife in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice?

Absolutely! During her visit to Winter River for a funeral of her grandfather, Astrid encounters Jeremy, who initially seems friendly but later reveals himself as a malevolent spirit. In reality, twenty-three years before the film’s events, Jeremy had murdered his parents and then hid in a treehouse to escape capture by police. As law enforcement drew near, he fell from the tree, fracturing his neck and meeting an untimely end. Now, both Jeremy and his deceased parents are trapped as ghosts within their own house.

As a devotee, I can’t help but yearn for my past human existence, and when Astrid unintentionally pedals her bike into my backyard, I seize the opportunity that presents itself – the prospect of using her to reclaim my life through Astrid’s Swap. I deceive her into giving up her mortal life in exchange for my spectral one, meaning she would assume my place in the afterlife while I remain among the living. Alas, it isn’t until the switch has been made that Astrid discovers my true motives.

In a heart-wrenching twist, I, as a devoted fan, found myself caught up in Lydia’s story when she uncovered Jeremy’s true self and understood his sinister plans for Astrid. With Astrid’s life hanging in the balance in the afterlife, Lydia turned to Betelgeuse for aid. However, there was a catch: Lydia had to promise to marry him first. Overwhelmed with the urgency to save her child, Lydia reluctantly agreed to Betelgeuse’s terms.

After that, she swiftly moves towards the hereafter and encounters Astrid preparing to embark on the Soul Express to Eternity. Fortunately, she and her former spouse (Astrid’s father) manage to intercept Astrid before she steps onto the train. However, Astrid’s physical life needs to be revived. To accomplish this, they must prevent Jeremy from obtaining his passport. Eventually, they track down Jeremy, but it seems their efforts are in vain. He appears to be on the verge of receiving his passport stamp from an immigration officer, which would allow him unrestricted access in the living world.

Yet, it transpires that the immigration official was actually Betelgeuse in disguise. Instead of granting Jeremy’s passport, he denied it, causing Jeremy to plummet into a fiery chasm. Consequently, Astrid regains her human life and can re-enter the mortal realm once more.

Do Lydia and Betelgeuse actually get married in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice?

In the sequel of Beetlejuice, much like how Lydia and Betelgeuse came close to tying the knot in the original movie, they nearly got married again. They even went through an elaborate wedding ceremony, but didn’t actually get hitched. Despite Lydia promising to marry Betelgeuse as part of a deal to help save Astrid, she ultimately didn’t have to keep her word because Betelgeuse broke the rules outlined in the “Handbook for the Recently Deceased.” His illegal act of bringing Lydia to the afterlife rendered their marriage contract invalid.

Here are some more things that happened in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice:

  • We find out how Charles died. While traveling from a bird-watching trip overseas, the plane Charles was on crashes into the ocean. But even though he survives the crash, a shark rises up out of the ocean and eats him alive. He ends up in the afterlife after his death.
  • We also find out how Richard, Astrid’s father, died. Two years prior to the events of the film, Richard died in a boating accident in South America. He was overseas fighting for climate justice when his untimely death happened. He also ends up in the afterlife after his death.
  • Delores, Betelgeuse’s vengeful ex-wife, and a money-hungry Rory are both eaten by a huge sandworm that Astrid was able to summon by using the afterlife book. All of this happens at Lydia and Betelgeuse’s wedding in the church.
  • While visiting Charles’ grave in hopes of connecting with his spirit, Delia takes out some snakes that she thought were non-venomous but actually are. They end up biting her in the neck, ultimately killing her. She’s then sent to the afterlife, where she’s reunited with Charles.
  • After Lydia and Betelgeuse’s wedding is called off, Lydia says his name three times, making him inflate to the point where he pops like a balloon. He is then believed to be sent back to the afterlife.

At the conclusion of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, there’s a leap forward in time, showing Lydia and Astrid exploring various parts of the world together. During this journey, Astrid encounters a man, marries him, and later gives birth to a child – remarkably, this child turns out to be none other than Baby Betelgeuse, the same character for whom Lydia had faked pregnancy at the start of the movie.

It turns out that everything was merely a dream for Lydia. Upon waking up, she finds Betelgeuse beside her in bed. He mentions having a strange dream and then vanishes. Although it’s unclear what this implies, it seems like the ghostly antics of Betelgeuse are far from over. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for another Beetlejuice movie!
