Beetlejuice Beetlejuice blows up the box office with a massive $110M for the second-highest September debut

As someone who has grown up watching Tim Burton classics and being a dedicated follower of all things cinematic, I must say, this Beetlejuice sequel has truly exceeded my expectations! With its impressive $110 million debut, it’s not only a hit but a testament to the enduring appeal of these beloved characters.

Despite the rather underwhelming summer movie season wrapping up, Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice managed an impressive first outing – the third highest opening of 2024.

In its initial release, the much-anticipated follow-up to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult film, Beetlejuice, raked in an astounding $110 million over the weekend, as reported by Deadline.

In simpler terms, the first movie made about $74.8 million globally 36 years ago, but the sequel surpassed that total earning.

Additionally, it holds the position of the third-biggest premiere in 2024, following Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million) and Deadpool & Wolverine ($211.4 million). It’s also receiving positive critical acclaim.

1) In September, the opening was only surpassed by that of IT in 2017 ($123.4 million), making it the second-highest September debut on record.

4,575 cinemas played host to the showing of this movie, making it share the title of the seventh-widest film release ever shown. Top Gun: Maverick holds the record for the widest release, having been screened in 4,735 theaters.

The film generated an impressive $24,043 per screen, surpassing expectations as initial predictions estimated its earnings to be anywhere between $90 million and $100 million.

In this movie, which was made at an estimated cost of $100 million, we see the return of Michael Keaton in the lead role, while Winona Ryder takes on the character of Lydia Deetz. Additionally, Jenna Ortega portrays Lydia’s daughter, Astrid.

In comparison to its domestic performance, the sequel didn’t perform exceptionally well abroad, earning an additional $35 million in international markets, resulting in a global box office debut of approximately $145.4 million.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I had the pleasure of witnessing our latest cinematic gem unseating Deadpool and Wolverine, the reigning six-time champions at the box office, from their lofty position. It appears that this may be the final weekend they dominate the box office scene.

It dropped 53.3% to take second place with $7.2 million, earning a $2,117 per-screen average from 3,400 theaters, a drop of 230 theaters from last weekend.

In other words, the second installment of the superhero film has earned approximately $614 million in the U.S., placing it among the top 15 highest-grossing domestic movies ever made. Additionally, its global box office revenue totals an impressive $1.28 billion.

The final five are completed by repeat appearances from Reagan ($5.2 million, $18.5 million in the U.S.) and Alien: Romulus ($3.9 million, $97.1 million worldwide), as well as It Ends With Us ($141.3 million domestic).

This weekend, Utopia’s Red Rooms debuted in a limited capacity, bringing in $40,295 across 50 cinemas, resulting in a disappointing $805 per-theater average.

Additionally, only one cinema premiered the MTV documentary titled “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!”, earning a revenue of $21,750.

Upcoming weekend will see the widespread release of “Speak No Evil” from Universal, starring James McEvoy, as well as “The Killers Game” from Lionsgate featuring Dave Bautista.
