Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and The Front Room among 4 new horror movies releasing this week, Sept. 2

As a lifelong cinephile who grew up with Tim Burton classics and has always had a soft spot for quirky, spooky tales, I am absolutely thrilled about this week’s lineup! The long-awaited sequel to one of my childhood favorites, “Beetlejuice,” is finally here, and as someone who still quotes the original movie on a regular basis, I can hardly wait to see what hijinks Betelgeuse will get up to in 2022.

We’ve just entered the first week of September, and pumpkin flavors and fall decorations are everywhere. In other words, it’s time for the spooky season to begin! This week, the most anticipated releases include the long-awaited sequel to ‘Beetlejuice’ and the thriller ‘The Front Room‘, starring Brandy, from A24.

On the television front, it’s somewhat quieter, yet genre enthusiasts might find intrigue in delving into Netflix’s murder mystery series titled “The Perfect Couple“, featuring Nicole Kidman. Continue reading for a comprehensive overview of what’s in store this week.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Theaters, Sept. 6)

36 years after the initial 1988 dark fantasy movie featuring Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton, the group reunites for a fresh storyline, and this time, they welcome actress Jenna Ortega from “Scream” and “Wednesday,” who portrays Lydia Deetz’s daughter, Astrid.

By pure chance, Astrid finds a miniature town hidden in the attic, which unintentionally reactivates a gateway to the Afterlife, enabling Betelgeuse to come back. Alongside returning cast members, Tim Burton is once again at the helm as director. So far, the film has been receiving favorable reviews from critics, but its success seems guaranteed due to nostalgia appeal alone.

The Front Room (Theaters, Sept. 6)

In this newest production from A24, Max Eggers and Sam Eggers are at the helm. The main character, portrayed by Brandy, is a woman in her early pregnancy. Alongside her husband, they find themselves in a perilous and harrowing predicament as they’re compelled to look after an estranged stepmother. In addition to Brandy, the movie features Kathryn Hunter, Andrew Burnap, and Neal Huff.

Curse of the Sin Eater (VOD, Sept. 6)

As a gaming enthusiast, if you’re on the hunt for a spine-chilling horror flick that offers a mind-bending and macabre premise, this is exactly what you’ve been searching for!

The movie “Curse of the Sin Eater” revolves around a hardworking commoner who strikes a bargain with a wealthy tycoon to claim his estate upon his demise. However, there’s a twist: the commoner must consume the man’s remains, thereby taking on all his misdeeds and transgressions. This intriguing film is helmed by independent director Justin Denton.

The Demon Disorder (Shudder, Sept. 6)

A fresh Australian horror movie focusing on supernatural occurrences, titled “The Haunting of Family Legacy“, revolves around a man who appears to be tormented by the spirit of his deceased father. When his brothers become suspicious of his behavior, they come together in an attempt to understand and resolve the mysterious situation.

In their reunion, they discover that they’re wholly unready for the supernatural powers looming over them and could potentially expose long-kept secrets that the family wishes to keep hidden. The Demon Disorder signifies the directorial debut of special effects maestro Steven Boyle.
