The script, penned by Warren Skaaren, centered around Betelgeuse chasing after his former lover’s fiancée. Regrettably, this screenplay didn’t progress beyond its initial stages.

Right after that intriguing turn of events, Tim Burton entrusted Jonathan Gems to craft a screenplay titled “Beetlejuice: A Hawaiian Vacation.” In this cinematic adventure, my dear film enthusiasts, our story unfolds as the Deetz clan relocates to the enchanting Hawaii, where Charles Deetz embarks on a project to construct a lavish resort. As destiny would have it, the family soon discovers that their new abode is built upon an ancient burial ground of a Hawaiian spiritual leader, who rises from the dead to haunt the Deetzes. In their desperate bid for survival, our heroes seek assistance from none other than Betelgeuse, who is assigned with outsmarting this Kahuna in a thrilling surf competition, thereby ensuring the safety of the Deetz family. Aren’t you eager to watch this spooky, wave-riding escapade unfold on the big screen?

The concept originated from Tim Burton’s mind, blending the eerie vibe of the original Beetlejuice with a surfing movie set in Hawaii. Burton further cultivated this idea following the first draft, undergoing revisions as early as 1993. A request for Kevin Smith to pen a new script was made in 1996, demonstrating the lengthy development process. However, in 1997, Jonathan Gems expressed doubt that the film would ever be produced because Winona Ryder might have been too old for the part of Lydia by then.

An Official Reason Hasn’t Been Given (But There Are Theories)

The production of a sequel for “Beetlejuice” didn’t resume until 2011, when Warner Bros. enlisted Seth Grahame-Smith to pen the script. However, by the time they started anew, it seemed like the concept of “Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian” had been abandoned, as the team opted instead for a more conventional “Beetlejuice” film.

It’s never been officially explained why the movie “Beetlejuice” didn’t follow up on the “Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian” premise. However, there are some theories about this. One possibility is that the story focused on Charles Deetz developing a resort, but Jeffrey Jones (the actor who played Otho in the original movie) had legal issues and couldn’t return for the sequel. This made it more difficult to tell the same story. Another theory is that it has been a long time since the original “Beetlejuice” was released, and fans might not have appreciated bringing back the character after so many years just for a strange Hawaiian surfing movie. Instead of going with this idea, the creators of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” chose to tell a more traditional story.

Moreover, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice faced criticism for being too much like the initial film.
