Beach Boys legend and musical genius Brian Wilson dies at 82

82-year-old Brian Wilson, a founding member and key influencer for legendary band The Beach Boys, has sadly passed away.

Or, more informally:
Brian Wilson, one of the founders and main forces behind the iconic band The Beach Boys, is no longer with us at 82 years old.

It’s been reported that Wilson passed away recently, and no particular reason for his demise has been disclosed. However, it’s worth noting that he had been battling a significant neurological disorder in the past few years.

In 1961, Wilson played a significant role in establishing the Beach Boys. However, their original moniker, The Pendletones, proved somewhat perplexing. Without the group’s knowledge, their first record label, Candix, decided to change this name.

It’s intriguing to ponder whether the popularity of Wilson (the band) and the Beach Boys would have been the same if their names hadn’t been changed. Fortunately, we are spared from having to answer this question definitively.

Wilson boasted a colossal array of talents. Not only did he ingeniously blend the harmonies of a barbershop quartet with rock music, but his innovative vision for how an album should resonate significantly shaped the course of rock and music history. The band’s groundbreaking album from 1966, titled “Pet Sounds“, left a lasting impact on influential bands like the Beatles.

During a period when albums were still primarily sold through singles, Pet Sounds was uniquely conceived as an entire album to be appreciated together. Despite this, it managed to yield two top 10 hits, “Sloop John B” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”. However, the standout track on the record could have been the song that originally appeared as the B-side to ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’.

God Only Knows,” by the Beach Boys, remains significant because of how Wilson restructured its melody. He did this at a time when the Beach Boys were still seen as a cheerful and optimistic “California” group. However, the Beach Boys, led by Wilson, were much more complex than their label suggests.

In summary, they churned out a total of 14 hit singles and 10 hit albums that made it to the top 10 on the US Billboard charts.

Among Wilson’s numerous creative advancements were tape-editing, multiple recording layers, and modular recording systems. One of his notable works, Pet Sounds, was recorded in monophonic format to ensure that the vocals and harmonies would be as prominent as each instrument individually. This was a unique approach at a time when numerous bands were just starting to experiment with stereophonic recording.

In the later stages of his life, Wilson encountered hardships following a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder and a strained relationship with his children. Remarkably, he managed to conquer these obstacles and mend fences with his daughters. Despite these challenges, his music career continued to thrive, leading him to embark on tours and complete projects like the remarkable “Smile” album.

1988 saw the induction of both Wilson and The Beach Boys into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A decade later, in 2000, Wilson was honored again, this time as a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
