We were already aware that a second season of Amandaland was planned, and now Joanna Lumley has shared even better news with fans: a special holiday episode will also be airing on television!
This BBC series, stemming from the well-loved British comedy Motherland, centers around Amanda Hughes (Lucy Punch), who is newly divorced. It portrays her experiences adjusting to life as a single parent after relocating to South London with her children.
After a successful series earlier in the year, the BBC gave the go-ahead for a continuation in March, and talk of a Christmas special began to spread. It turns out the rumours were true, as Lumley has now confirmed that a festive episode is indeed planned.

The actress who plays Amanda’s mother, Felicity, discussed her future plans while on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show earlier this week. When asked about her availability, the well-known performer simply stated she was “busy.”
I’m starting a new season of Amandaland soon,” she said. “The first season did incredibly well – a real triumph. Lucy Punch is brilliant. We’re filming seven more episodes, including a Christmas special that will air this year.

I’m super excited to hear they’re doing a festive special! It’s awesome news, and it seems like a lot of other people agree – the show is currently sitting at an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 12 reviews. Fans and critics both seem to be loving it, which is always a good sign!
Occasionally, a truly original show gives rise to a fantastic spin-off. It’s still too soon to tell if Amandaland is one of those, but The Independent said, “Let’s just say this smart and cheerful series is incredibly appealing.”
The show is both hilariously funny and surprisingly touching. This is mainly because of the performer’s excellent comedic timing and sincere way of delivering witty dialogue, according to The Guardian. Meanwhile, The New Statesman called the series “genius”.

The London Evening Standard also complimented Lucy Punch’s acting, stating: “She flawlessly handles the transition from a likeable supporting role to a captivating lead, doing so with surprising and impressive skill.”
Besides Punch and Lumley, the actors appearing in Amandaland also include Philippa Dunne, Samuel Anderson, and Siobhán McSweeney. Sharon Horgan, the creator of Motherland, is a producer on this new spin-off series.
Amandaland airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
