BBC’s “raw” and “heartbreaking” new Y2K drama confirms release date with first-look trailer
The first trailer for a “raw” and “heartbreaking” upcoming BBC drama has arrived.
The Y2K era coming-of-age drama titled “What If It Feels Like Being a Girl” premieres on BBC Three starting from 3rd June. On that date, the entire series can be found on BBC iPlayer as well.
As a fellow gamer diving into an immersive narrative, I’d say this memoir, penned by the talented Paris Lees, offers a gripping journey through the realms of pain, laughter, and self-exploration. It’s all about breaking free, finding oneself, and sometimes self-destructing – but in the most captivating way possible.
What to Read Next
As we enter a brand new century, there’s an entire world waiting to be discovered. However, teenager Byron (Ellis Howard) finds himself trapped in a modest, economically struggling town, which has lost its vibrancy ever since the coal mine closed in the 80s. Yearning for change and freedom, Byron is determined to break free from his surroundings, no matter what it takes.
Life bursts into full swing as Byron ventures into the bustling underground scene of Nottingham, encountering a world filled with partying, substance abuse, and an unruly brood of miscreants – The Fallen Divas.
In the captivating presence of Laquarn Lewis, known as Lady Die, and other companions like Sticky Nikki, portrayed by Alex Thomas-Smith, Dirty Damian, played by Adam Ali, Byron discovers a group of peers who share his spirit. Meanwhile, a strong competition arises between Byron and Sasha (Hannah Jones), a stunning woman with a sharp tongue.
Together, they lived a wild lifestyle filled with begging, stealing, and partying excessively during the UK’s club scene in the early 2000s. However, every good time must eventually come to an end, and when Byron was ensnared by the charms of Liam, a notorious bad boy, they experienced a startling event that would irrevocably alter their lives.
The initial preview presents an assortment of diverse characters, as Byron invites viewers into the world of the year 2000.
As I watch everyone enjoying themselves, I can’t help but feel left out. Pondering over this, I find myself asking, “What would I do if I had absolutely nothing to lose?
After bidding farewell to his native town, Byron finds himself warmly received by a group known as The Fallen Divas. As the trailer unfolds, it reveals a series of lively gatherings that eventually spiral into turmoil, with the flickering lights of approaching police vehicles signaling their arrival.
In this production, Ellis Howard from Red Rose is playing Byron alongside stars such as Hannah Walters known for Adolescence, Laura Haddock famed from The Recruit, and Michael Socha, who has been in Showtrial.
In addition to the main cast, Fay Ripley from “Cold Feet” and Selina Mosinski, known for her role as Charity Shop Sue, will also appear as guests on the show.
“Starting from the 3rd of June, ‘What It Feels Like for a Girl’ will air on BBC Three. You can watch it in its entirety on BBC iPlayer on the same day.”
