BBC’s new Wallace & Gromit movie is another cracking pun-filled delight

As a seasoned gamer of life with an unquenchable thirst for all things nostalgic and brilliantly British, I must say that the return of Wallace & Gromit after 19 long years is nothing short of a Christmas miracle! The anticipation for Feathers McGraw’s return has been building since “The Wrong Trousers” back in ’93, and I can confirm that his comeback was well worth the wait.

These days, legacy sequels are popular, and it seems that even the beloved pair, Wallace & Gromit, will join the fray this coming holiday season.

It has been 16 years since their brief film “A Matter of Loaf and Death” and 19 years since their full-length production “The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.” Given this gap, their comeback is definitely belated. And they’re not embarking on this journey alone.

In the much-anticipated film titled “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” the infamous penguin character Feathers McGraw makes his comeback. What’s particularly gratifying is that this isn’t merely a brief, audience-pleasing appearance. Instead, Feathers plays a significant role in the plot, making “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” the franchise’s first installment to be an actual sequel.

The unexpected follow-up to “The Wrong Trousers” goes by the title “Vengeance Most Fowl“, and it’s a definite must-see this holiday season on the BBC.

Wallace consistently pushes technological boundaries, and his current endeavor involves AI, albeit in a unique way. His newest creation is Norbot, a smart gnome engineered for various gardening duties or “improvements for gnomes,” which has been well-received among the neighborhood.

However, similar to many of Wallace’s creations, Norbot doesn’t always perform as intended, as it seems to be developing a malevolent consciousness of its own. Much like the techno-trousers from The Wrong Trousers, this recent mishap of Wallace’s might just be the work of Feathers McGraw, who appears to be hatching another devious plot…

As a fellow game enthusiast, I won’t be the one to ruin your excitement for the upcoming movie, “Vengeance Most Fowl”. Trust me when I say it’s packed with the clever puns and offbeat British humor that you’ve grown fond of from Aardman. One of the funniest jokes of the year, you ask? It involves cheese! Yes, you heard it right, a cheese-based verification gag that will tickle your funny bone! So, grab your popcorn, sit back, and get ready to laugh out loud!

The attention to detail that has gone into every frame is extraordinary, especially when you consider the work that goes into even a split-second gag with stop-motion animation. Wordplay is everywhere you look, from a Marvel-inspired gardening magazine to a very silly and very funny spin on Ant and Dec.

Feathers McGraw’s reappearance has been hinted at through numerous Easter eggs across almost every production by Aardman Studios since “The Wrong Trousers”. When he finally made his official return, it didn’t fail to impress, as he remains the cunning antagonist we grew fond of 31 years ago (I apologize for reminding you that it has been that long, if I made you feel old).

Directors Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham, in collaboration with writer Mark Burton, ensure that the film is richly packed, rather than just offering a taste. The character Feathers enjoys not one but two thrilling slow-motion chair rotations (with a delightful Bond villain joke included), and he dons another instantly recognizable foolproof disguise.

The animated film “Vengeance Most Fowl” isn’t merely a sentimental journey back to Wallace, Gromit, and Feathers. While it’s delightful to see them reunited, the character Norbot, brilliantly voiced by Reece Shearsmith and featuring an unforgettable tune, is an exceptional newcomer. The animation artfully portrays Norbot’s villainous transformation, and the chilling effect of a vacant, emotionless gaze is effectively conveyed.

In relation to “The Wrong Trousers”, the film culminates in an original and riotously funny scene that resembles a blend of “Wallace & Gromit” with elements of “Mission: Impossible” combined with “Fast & Furious”. However, instead of cars or action-packed stunts, it features canal boats. This scene beautifully pays tribute to the model train chase.

The entire film shares this characteristic. It’s brimming with references to the broader Aardman universe, plenty of witty puns, and humor that’s distinctly British and absurd. Yet, it’s not just a repeat of old successes; instead, it gives a fresh twist to the series, making it appealing for new audiences as well.

Wallace & Gromit: The Case of the Angry Poultry” offers yet another delightful adventure featuring our beloved pair, which you’ll find yourself eager to revisit multiple times.
