The popular BBC crime drama Shetland is back tonight! This season promises to be different from anything viewers have seen before, with detectives Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) and Tosh McIntosh (Alison O’Donnell) investigating a particularly disturbing case.
The detectives find the body of the retired social worker and determine she’d been exposed to the weather for several days. As they investigate, they delve into her life – both her history and her current connections – as well as the lives of people who knew her.
The story reveals disturbing secrets and awful acts hidden within this tight-knit community, according to the synopsis.

O’Donnell explained to Radio Times that the relationship between the two main characters goes through ups and downs, with difficulties that cause them to doubt themselves and each other. They sometimes become protective of what they’ve done.
Tosh starts taking more control and becoming more assertive,” she said. “Throughout the season, she confidently establishes her vision for how things should be done. Meanwhile, we also see Calder displaying a kinder, more empathetic side.”
Now that we know and care about the characters and their relationship, the story can start to surprise us and explore new directions. We see a more compassionate side of Calder as Tosh faces a really difficult situation, and her reactions are very different from what we’ve seen from her before.
The actress jokingly revealed that people on set nicknamed her “Dark Tosh,” explaining that around episode 5, her character really began to embrace a darker path. She said, “That’s when I felt like it truly became the ‘Dark Tosh’ story arc.”
Jensen pointed out that we tend to see others as imperfect people – those who occasionally make mistakes, say the wrong thing, act impulsively, or simply lose their composure.
She added that viewers will see these characters facing unfamiliar and challenging situations.
Steven Robertson, Lewis Howden, Anne Kidd, Angus Miller, Eubha Akilade, and Conor McCarry will all be back for the new series, reprising their roles as DC Sandy Wilson, Sgt Billy McCabe, Cora McLean, Donnie, PC Lorna Burns, and PC Alex Grant, respectively.
