BBC’s heart-wrenching and award-winning crime drama will resurface on Netflix this week

The emotional BBC crime drama Responsible Child will be available to stream on Netflix this week. Originally shown in 2019, the film tells the story of a boy who stands trial accused of murder.

The almost 90-minute program is no longer on BBC iPlayer, but it will be available on Netflix starting this Friday.

The film Responsible Child is presented as being inspired by true events, but it’s a work of fiction. It centers on 12-year-old Ray, who sees his mother’s boyfriend, Scott, attack his older brother, Nathan, with an axe. The story follows what happens when Scott is found not guilty and comes back to live with the family, leading to a worsening situation.

According to the synopsis, the brothers attacked and killed Scott after learning he had once again threatened to retaliate.

Following the murder, both brothers were arrested and accused of killing Scott. As they began the legal process, Nathan and Ray were separated and each met with their own lawyers.

Because Ray is only ten years old – the age at which children can be held criminally responsible in the UK – he’s living with a foster family while awaiting his court case. His lawyers are trying to convince the court that Ray wasn’t fully in control during the attack and should be found guilty of manslaughter instead of murder.

When the trial starts, Nathan’s lawyers decide he won’t testify. This means Ray will have to take the stand by himself to defend himself in court, according to the show’s description.

Billy Barratt, the star of Blinded by the Light, won an International Emmy Award – making him the youngest ever recipient – and the film itself also received the award for best TV Movie/Mini-Series.

Michelle Fairley, known for Game of Thrones, stars alongside Tom Burke from Strike and Stephen Campbell Moore of The History Boys in this film. Sean Buckley, who worked on Skins, wrote the screenplay, and Nick Holt, director of The Murder Trial, directed the movie.

Piers Wenger, head of BBC Drama, has called Responsible Child a show that tackles one of the most difficult and important issues facing us today.

Nick and Sean’s compelling film delves into the difficult question of when a child should be tried as an adult in England’s legal system. It sensitively and thoughtfully tells a harrowing true story, exploring whether children accused of serious crimes should be treated as adults or remain within the child justice system. We are very grateful to them for bringing this important and challenging topic to BBC Two with such care and understanding.

Responsible Child will stream on Netflix from Friday.
