BBC’s Call the Midwife reveals its Christmas special will include a series first
As a seasoned Call the Midwife viewer with over a decade of watching this heartwarming series, I must say that the news of two 60-minute Christmas specials has filled me with as much joy as a midwife does when she delivers a healthy baby! The anticipation is palpable, and I can’t wait to see how Heidi Thomas weaves her magical storytelling into these extended episodes.
Call the Midwife will mark a first by debuting two 60-minute Christmas specials later this year.
In a press statement, Heidi Thomas, the creator and writer, expressed that they are excited to offer extended festive episodes, stating, “Aren’t we all thrilled at the thought of discovering an additional, delightful surprise beneath the Christmas tree? That’s exactly what we aim to provide with our expanded episode format.
“When I was asked to write a two-part Christmas special for 2024, I couldn’t resist!”
In her statement, the show’s executive producer, Dame Pippa Harris, mentioned that for the very first time, viewers will be able to indulge in a delightful two-part holiday spectacle this Christmas. Heidi has crafted an enchanting special, one that I am confident will captivate our devoted fans.
The Christmas episodes will be groundbreaking for the series as they conclude with an exciting suspense, leaving viewers eagerly waiting for the next installment.
The announcement arrived, offering an initial peek at this year’s unique presentation featuring the anticipated joy. In it, Cliff Parisi as Fred was seen in his traditional Santa attire, and Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) stood alongside Angela Turner (Alice Brown) near a Nativity scene model.
In the Christmas season of 1969, the storyline of Call the Midwife will unfold in Poplar. The main focus will be on a funfair arriving in town, but there’s more than just joy in store. A hint of trouble lurks amidst the festivities as influenza and the Hong Kong flu pose threats. Additionally, tension mounts as the community anxiously awaits news about an escaped prisoner, who might be hiding nearby following a series of burglaries.
The synopsis does not address the on-going rumours surrounding Olly Rix’s future as Matthew on the show and only makes reference to Trixie (Helen George) making “a fleeting visit to Nonnatus Houseā¦ to see her brother Geoffrey (Christopher Harper).”
The head of BBC Drama, Lindsay Salt, spoke about this year’s exceptional special edition, saying: “Call the Midwife has grown into one of the UK’s beloved holiday television customs. This year, we aimed to surpass ourselves and deliver Call the Midwife‘s grandest Christmas spectacle yet!
Heidi and her group have prepared something delightful for you, offering two captivating episodes filled with all the charming aspects that make this unique series perfect for the holiday season.
