As a follower who has grown up with the enchanting world of wildlife presented by BBC, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Tony Soper. At 95, he leaves behind an indelible legacy that has spanned generations and continues to inspire countless individuals like myself.

BBC star Tony Soper has died aged 95.

It was disclosed that the wildlife expert, book writer, and nature enthusiast, who established the BBC’s Natural History Unit, passed away on Wednesday.

Tony is survived by his wife Hilary, his sons, and five grandchildren.

Lorraine Kelly has been expressing warm tributes, posting an emotional message on social media platforms, reminiscing about Tony as a source of great joy and pleasure during their past interviews many years ago.

In one of my initial television appearances, I had the pleasure of hosting a guest who discussed his fascinating book about owls. This remarkable individual was a true source of inspiration.

It’s quite unfortunate: Wildlife presenter Stephen Moss expressed that Tony Soper had a significant impact on numerous generations of bird enthusiasts and broadcasters.

‘I had the huge privilege of working with Tony and getting to know him.

‘The last person who was there at the start of the BBC Natural History Unit. A lovely man.’

Tony started his career with the BBC at age 17 as a trainee in their youth program, and later moved on to radio production, where he served as a features producer.

Later on, he transitioned to television work, and it was during this time that he had a major career milestone. This occurred when he temporarily took on the role of an informal assistant floor manager for the pioneering live wildlife TV broadcast, Wild Geese in Winter, which happened to be the first outside broadcast in 1954.

In the 1960s, Tony’s professional journey experienced significant growth, commencing with an assignment co-hosting Animal Magic alongside Johnny Morris.

Later, Tony hosted several programs such as Birdwatch, Birdspot, Unveiling Birds, and Exploring Animals.

He also presented Beside the Sea, Wildtrack, and Nature.
