BBC star Lauren Laverne shares her joy at son Fergus, 17, ‘smashing his GCSEs’ after revealing cancer diagnosis
As I delve into the captivating life story of Laverne (formerly known as Form Gofton), I am struck by her remarkable journey and versatility. From punk rocker to radio DJ, television presenter, and interviewer extraordinaire, she has truly worn many hats with grace and panache.
Lauren Laverne proudly announced that her son, Fergus, excelled in his General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams and is now embarking on a journey to film school.
On Wednesday, the 46-year-old BBC disc jockey shared that she’s currently undergoing recovery following an early detection of cancer.
On Desert Island Discs, the host posted a picture of her son Fergus and conveyed that despite having a challenging week, she preferred to emphasize a positive aspect.
Overwhelmed with emotion this week, I wanted to share some fantastic updates that have brightened our day! I’m absolutely blown away by your heartwarming messages – they mean the world to me and will take time for me to fully appreciate each one during my healing process. But today, we received some truly amazing news that has made it all worthwhile!
Instead of typically sharing photos of my children, given that he’s nearly 17 and just aced his GCSEs en route to film school, I feel comfortable congratulating him today: Well done, Ferg!
“We’re incredibly proud of you for being such a smart, humorous, compassionate, and imaginative young man. Your musical preferences are fantastic as well!”
In the photo, Fergus posed in a black T-shirt with a white print reading ‘Jesus loves UK Garage’.
Apart from Fergus, Lauren is likewise a mom to their son Mack, who she married Graeme Fisher in 2005. They are his parents.
The mother of-two did not reveal the type of cancer she had been diagnosed with but said it had been picked up ‘unexpectedly’ during a screening test.
Laverne thanked the medical teams ‘who have got me this far with incredible skill and kindness’.
Sharing some private updates now, I’ve received an unexpected early detection of cancer from a recent screening test. Fortunately, the prognosis is positive, and I’m looking forward to a complete recovery.
Currently ensconced within the healing walls of a hospital, I find myself compelled to express my heartfelt gratitude. To begin, I must acknowledge the unwavering dedication and remarkable abilities of the medical professionals who have guided me thus far on my journey, doing so with an extraordinary blend of skill and compassion.
To my extraordinary family and friends who have been by my side every step of the way, I am deeply grateful and love you all immensely. My heartfelt thanks also extend to my colleagues, especially those at @itg_ltd, @bbc6music, @bbctheoneshow, and #DesertIslandDiscs for their unwavering support and understanding as I take the time I need to focus on my well-being.
Please, don’t delay – go get that check-up done today!
She stated that about half of us may develop cancer at some stage, and promptly discovering it is crucial, she emphasized.
“Typically, I’m responsible for spreading positivity during our broadcasts, and if you’ve got some extra good vibes to share, they would be greatly appreciated here. Sending out lots of affection to anyone navigating similar waters or those who have safely returned. Best wishes, xxx”
An outpouring of support has flooded Laverne’s Instagram post since she made the announcement.

“BBC Radio 4 and Desert Island Discs are extending their warmest regards and best wishes to you.”
On the BBC’s One Show, they expressed similar feelings by saying: “All of us on The One Show are sending you our affectionate thoughts, we dearly miss you and can’t wait to have you return with us as soon as possible.”

He expressed, “Wishing you an abundance of positive energy and affection; you’re fantastic and filled with radiant happiness, may your recovery be swift and extraordinary, perhaps even granting you exceptional abilities in the process.”
‘Love to you and the family.’
BBC Radio 4 presenter Shaun Keaveny expressed: “Sending you a world full of positive, orange-hued feelings. Please keep your phone handy. Can’t wait to see you again. You’re truly extraordinary, with love XX.”
While former Arsenal striker and ex-Match of The Day pundit Ian Wright posted seven heart emojis.

1. Gabby Logan expressed, “Sending you all the love and positive healing, Lauren,” while Vicky McClure commented, “Sending love and swift healing, with hugs xx.” (Here, I’ve tried to keep the essence of the original statements but made them more conversational and easier to read.)
In 2022, Laverne shared with The Guardian the story of how her romantic relationship with her spouse began, as she was prompted to describe her most unforgettable kiss.
‘The first with my husband, 20 years ago,’ she said.
In the early 2000s, we collaborated on a popular television series. Later, he asked me to join him at a performance, expecting others to attend too. However, it turned out no one else showed up. It was then realized that it was Valentine’s Day, resulting in us spending the day together instead.
In 2019, she shared with Red magazine that she was enjoying and cherishing each significant moment with her sons Mack and Fergus.
She expressed her admiration for her children, describing them as amazing and outstanding. She is also acutely aware that time passes quickly, so she’s cherishing each moment and relishing every achievement they reach.
Laverne admitted that her forties were exceptionally dynamic and exciting, remarking that it was during this time that she came to understand there are numerous creative and radiant ways to lead one’s life.
She mentioned that your forties are quite a whirlwind. A lot is happening, much like the chaotic noise before an orchestra tunes – it’s simply incredible!
In your forties, you find it intriguing as you discover numerous unique and wonderful methods to lead a life. Isn’t that marvelous?
Laverne also presents on BBC’s The One show, having signed on to the show in 2023.
Hailing from Sunderland, she launched her music journey by establishing the band Kenickie alongside her companions.
Initially known as Lauren Gofton, she later adopted the name Laverne upon joining the punk band.
Through their clever back-and-forth exchanges both onstage and off, the musicians gained a reputation for it. This reputation eventually earned them invitations to appear on shows like Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Have I Got News For You, which Lauren was then invited to join.
Following her musical stint she became a radio DJ, earning slots at BBC Radio 1 and Radio 6.
During a short break from her duties due to her fibromyalgia treatment, Kirsty Young temporarily filled in as host for Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs.
Over time, she’s had the opportunity to interview notable figures such as Cate Blanchett, Stanley Tucci, and Young – all prominent figures in Hollywood.
Apart from her role here, Laverne is also the morning host for BBC Radio 6 Music’s breakfast program. Previously, she has hosted several television shows, among them Channel 4’s late-night comedy series, 10 O’Clock Live.
2022 left me completely shattered, for I lost my beloved mother, Celia Gofton, unexpectedly while I was hosting at the Glastonbury Festival, a moment that will forever linger in my heart.
The Disc Jockey posted a touching tribute on Instagram, expressing that Celia was the “kindest and strongest individual I’ve encountered,” while also expressing his deep sorrow.
‘She was the kindest, most compassionate and most tenacious person I have ever met,’ she said.
‘Born in the middle of nine kids, she was a master peacemaker and persuader.’
She went on in the length post to detail her mother’s life from school to being cared for at UCLH.
At the end of her post, she expressed gratitude to the team at UCHL who provided care for her mother and her loved ones during her final days.
Laverne expressed: ‘She formed bonds wherever she traveled, such as with the remarkable teams from UCLH, who took care of her – and us – during the final stages of her life. A heartfelt thanks goes out to them for all they did.’
We’re deeply saddened by her passing. She had recently handed out money for the children’s trip to Glastonbury, and she was eagerly awaiting to see Paulie, her beloved Beatle, perform tonight.
“Ever since she watched him perform at the Sunderland Empire in 1963, she had been an ardent admirer. Later on, I had the pleasure of meeting him as well, and she found him incredibly kind towards her.”
Dear Mom, my affection for you is eternal. I’m grateful for the extraordinary life you’ve given me. I’m at a loss about moving forward without you, but I promise to fill my days with intrigue, and you will remain forever etched in my heart, dear XXX.
