As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the gritty world of detective games, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming BBC series, Virdee. The fact that it’s based on best-selling crime novels and boasts a diverse and talented cast is just the icing on the cake.
The BBC has shared some first-look stills from new Bradford-based detective series Virdee.
In the six-episode showcase, Staz Nair from “Rebel Moon” takes on the role of Detective Harry Virdee. Unfortunately, he experiences estrangement from his Sikh relatives due to marrying a woman named Saima, who belongs to the Muslim faith.
In the aftermath of a city-wide gang conflict in Bradford, a young vendor meets an untimely end. This tragedy sets off a struggle between Harry’s commitment to enforcing justice and his connections within the criminal underworld.
Meanwhile, as his personal life spirals out of control, he finds himself on a mission to track down the mysterious assailant threatening those close to him.
As the city is held hostage by the murderer, Harry understands that he’ll have to enlist the aid of his brother-in-law Riaz, a prominent drug lord who heads the biggest cartel within the county.
Faced with an alliance that poses a threat to him, his family, and the city, Harry finds himself at a crossroads: should he prioritize saving himself and his kin, or make the sacrifice to protect the city instead. Regrettably, it seems impossible for him to accomplish both tasks.
Fresh images from the show depict Nair in his role as the head detective, joined by Aysha Kala portraying his spouse, Saima, and Elizabeth Berrington from “Good Omens” playing his superior officer, Detective Superintendent Clare Conway.
Among the other actors, we find Vikash Bhai portraying Saima’s brother named Riaz, Kulvinder Ghir and Sudha Bhuchar playing the roles of Harry’s parents, Ranjit and Jyoti, and Danyal Ismail taking on the character of DS Amin, Harry’s latest partner.
In the production, Nina Singh takes on the role of Tara Virdee, who is Harry’s niece and also a crime journalist, and Manjinder Virk portrays Harry’s sibling, Mandip.
The group is completed by Tomi May, Andi Jashy, Hussina Raja, Yousef Naseer, Akshay Kumar, Madiha Ansari, Nichola Burley, Javed Khan, and Ramon Tikaram.
Virdee is derived from the top-selling crime novels penned by AA Dhand, with the author himself adapting his works for the big screen. The trio of Mark Tonderai, Milad Alami, and Mo Ali assume directorial roles.
After the series announcement earlier this year, Nair expressed his gratitude for being given the opportunity to explore this rich and intricate tale of cultural blending and the lengths we go to safeguard those we cherish.
Virdee will air on BBC One.
