BBC series RETURNS with final episodes months after being dropped from TV schedule - as heartbroken viewers brand the broadcasting giant 'cruel' for wielding the axe

As a longtime fan of British soaps, I must admit that the news about the cancellation of “Doctors” has left me feeling a bit sentimental. Having followed this show since its debut in 2000, I’ve witnessed the growth and evolution of characters like Jimmi Clay (Adrian Lewis Morgan), who has been with us for an impressive 17 years now. The soap was also known for providing a platform to up-and-coming talents such as Emilia Clarke, who made her acting debut in a 2009 episode.

Axed BBC series Doctors returned to TV screens on Monday after being off air for months.

This past holiday, the iconic medical series made its comeback on the BBC lineup, yet viewers are anticipating a grim outcome.

Earlier this summer, doctors took their customary break, and started airing the initial episodes of their final run prior to the finale in December, which marks the end of their 23-year series.

Spectators witnessed the moment when Paige caught Bear off-guard, leaving it uncertain if Michelle might rekindle things with a past love.

Enthusiasts swiftly flocked to what was once known as Twitter, voicing their displeasure that the BBC would resume the series following a lengthy hiatus only to cancel it, calling the move heartless.

It feels unfair to resume the series following such a lengthy hiatus, just to conclude it swiftly; I wish it could continue airing; Hooray! Finally back… I’ve missed it terribly.

I’m really looking forward to it, as it’s been a long time coming. I’m still deeply saddened that the amazing Doctors series will be ending permanently soon.

Why must it conclude? It’s adored by many, providing amusement that surpasses even a cooking show or a sports broadcast.

Doctors is being axed by the BBC after 23 years amid falling ratings and rising costs.

It was reported that the team behind the famous soap opera received unfortunate news last October, during a meeting with network executives, following an unsuccessful attempt to relocate the series to prime-time which didn’t manage to attract viewers.

In a statement, the BBC announced that they’ve made a tough choice to conclude their long-running daytime drama, Doctors, which has been airing for 23 years.

Due to a surge in costs associated with drama production (a term we could replace with “show creation”), the expenses for our program have skyrocketed, and additional funds are needed now for renovations at our current filming location, or to move the production to a new site entirely.

As a devoted follower, I understand that with our fixed license fee, the BBC faces funding hurdles, which necessitates difficult decisions to enhance the worth and enjoyment for our audience.

We continue to stand firmly behind the West Midlands, channeling all the allocated funds for doctors towards developing fresh initiatives within this region instead.

Let me express my gratitude to every member of the medical team, both on-screen and behind-the-scenes, who have contributed to this series since its debut in 2000.

We recognize the significant part Doctors have played in fostering talents, and we aim to create fresh avenues to enhance abilities in structured screenwriting.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the grand finale of this captivating series is set to air in December 2024. Rest assured, we’re collaborating hand-in-hand with BBC Studios to ensure the finale lives up to its significance and delivers an unforgettable experience for all viewers.

Doctors first debuted in its famous lunchtime slot in 2000.

In February 2022, the team was delighted when their production was moved to a prime-time spot on BBC Two, replacing Holby City which had been canceled.

Despite attempts to boost ratings, the soap opera only saw declines, and it was returned to its original afternoon slot after eight weeks.

Due to escalating costs associated with the cost-of-living predicament and heightened inflation in dramatic programming, the decision makers at the BBC have had no choice but to implement substantial reductions to their prominent shows.

1. The broadcasting network is finding it difficult to compete with high-budget dramas produced by emerging streaming platforms and also due to the two-year suspension of the license fee.

Additionally, it encompasses the long-standing series “Casualty” on Saturdays, which will see a reduction in its typical episode count as well.

In the imaginary town of Letherbridge, nestled within the West Midlands, the series “Doctors” delves into the lives of medical professionals working at both an NHS clinic and a university-affiliated health center, along with their private lives.

Initially, just 41 episodes were planned for the series, but once it garnered such a fantastic response, it transformed into an ongoing daytime drama, leaving me hooked!

By the year 2022, on average, there were approximately 1.6 million live viewers tuning in daily to watch the Doctor’s show.

The soap’s longest serving cast member is Adrian Lewis Morgan, who joined as Jimmi Clay in 2005.

Doctors was also renowned for its involvement of hundreds of extras and guest stars each year.

Notable figures like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Denise Welch, Jodie Comer, and Eddie Redmayne have graced the soap with their presence.
