As a gamer with a heart for animated tales and a soft spot for nostalgia, I must say, the new BBC adaptation of Tiddler has me hooked! With a star-studded cast like Hannah Waddingham, Reuben Kirby, Lolly Adefope, Jayde Adams, and Rob Brydon, this fishy tale is bound to be a splash.
The BBC has unveiled a first look at the new Julia Donaldson adaptation Tiddler.
In the approaching Christmas-themed cartoon, featuring the vocal talents of Hannah Waddingham, we follow the journey of a fish who gets lost. This fish embarks on an adventure using the art of storytelling to navigate his path back home.
In the initial trailer, the renowned actor from Ted Lasso provides the narration, discussing the character Tiddler and his captivating stories. Amid peril, as Tiddler gets stranded in the vast ocean, a glimmer of hope arises when a familiar tale unexpectedly reaches him.
Tiddler hails from a story by authors Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, well-known for creating timeless tales like The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom.
Tiddler’s voice is performed by Reuben Kirby, while Lolly Adefope lends her voice to Miss Skate, Jayde Adams voices Plaice in the animation, and Rob Brydon takes on four roles: Fisherman, Whale, Starfish, and Anchovy. The cast also includes stars from shows like Ghosts, Strictly Come Dancing, and Gavin & Stacey.
Previously discussing the project, Waddingham mentioned: “Recording the narrator for this Magic Light Pictures’ Christmas special was truly delightful experience.
Tiddler is a story that resonates with our inner storyteller, giving young readers an insight into the experiences of being a tiny fish navigating a vast ocean, a feeling many can relate to from their own lives.
Over the years, I’ve cherished sharing books written by Julia and Axel with my little one. It’s truly a delight to now adapt one of these beloved stories into this enchanting animated adaptation.

Tiddler will air on BBC One this Christmas.
