BBC responds to reports that Top Gear ‘comeback is in the works’ after 3 years away

The BBC has addressed rumors that Top Gear will return after being off the air for almost four years. The popular car show, which broadcast over 250 episodes during its 20-year history, is reportedly being revived.

The show stopped broadcasting in 2022. Work on its 34th season was paused in March 2023 after an incident involving presenter Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, which happened four months earlier.

The BBC announced in November 2023 that the popular motoring show was being put on hold indefinitely. However, recent reports suggest they may now reconsider, which will likely please many viewers.

I just read in The Sun that they’re bringing Top Gear back! Apparently, this will be the second reboot – it originally ran from 1977 to 2001. They’re replacing the old presenters – Flintoff, Paddy, and Chris – with a whole new team, which is a big change!

The report suggests the new hosts won’t necessarily be famous personalities, but people with strong, engaging characters – likely experts in the world of cars. It’s also possible the revamped show could premiere as soon as next year.

Although it’s not officially confirmed, a BBC Studios representative told Digital Spy that the Top Gear brand is still successful with its online content, magazines, and international versions.

We’re constantly looking for fresh opportunities to grow the brand and connect with viewers using well-known properties, but we don’t have any news about a TV series right now.

The show first ran from 1977 to 2001, and then it was brought back in 2002. Its most popular period, featuring hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, lasted from 2003 to 2015.

After the original presenters left, the show went through a period of change with several hosts coming and going, including Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc, Eddie Jordan, Sabine Schmitz, and Rory Reid. Harris joined in 2016, and Flintoff and McGuinness came on board three years later.

Throughout the show’s history, the mysterious racing driver known as The Stig was a constant presence. Three different drivers have played the role, hiding behind the famous helmet and suit: Perry McCarthy, Ben Collins, and Phil Keen.

Top Gear airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
