BBC responds to reports that Peaky Blinders’ boss’s “stuffed” ’80s-set drama has been axed

Steven Knight’s 1980s Birmingham-set drama This Town has been cancelled after one season.

Debuting in March 2024, this six-episode series was written by the creator of “Peaky Blinders” and is helmed by director Paul Whittington. The story revolves around a group of friends immersed in the vibrant 1980s music scene of Birmingham and Coventry, amidst the tumultuous backdrop of unrest and violence that was prevalent in the West Midlands at the time.

The series has reportedly been axed after just one season due to low ratings.

The BBC expresses heartfelt thanks to Steven Knight, Kudos, and everyone involved in the production of ‘This Town.’ A significant portion of its success can be attributed to Steven’s deep affection for the West Midlands,” stated a representative from the BBC (as reported by RadioTimes.com).

We’re excited to collaborate with him on upcoming projects and are currently discussing our next steps.

The principal actors include Levi Brown, Jordan Bolger, Ben Rose, and Eve Austin, among whom Michelle Dockery from ‘Downton Abbey’ portrays the character Estella, while Nicholas Pinnock assumes the role of Deuce Williams.

This town received a modest 67% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and Digital Spy’s assessment of it was that it felt overly full or crammed.

As a devoted fan myself, I must admit that I’ve noticed The Times pointing out an interesting aspect about our beloved series. They mentioned how the numerous interwoven storylines might prove challenging for some fans, suggesting that a few viewers may grow impatient as the show navigates its early stages to find its footing.

Although the show “This Town” got cancelled, Knight is currently engrossed in several new ventures. One of these is penning the script for the upcoming James Bond film, which Denis Villeneuve, director of “Dune”, will be helming.

During a recent interview on BBC Five Live Breakfast, Knight expressed his optimism, saying, “After being a Bond fan for so long, I believe I’ll be able to create something that retains the essence of Bond but offers a fresh take, improved quality, and increased strength and boldness.

The acclaimed screenwriter, known for works like “The Veil” and “A Thousand Blows,” is set to carry on the Peaky Blinders storyline in the upcoming film “The Immortal Man.” Notably, Cillian Murphy will once again portray Tommy Shelby.

This Town season 1 is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
