BBC responds to Doctor Who axe rumours in rare statement

The BBC has countered talks suggesting that “Doctor Who” might be canceled anytime soon, stating that these assumptions are untrue.

The popular sci-fi series is slated to come back later this year with its 15th season of the modern era, but according to The Sun, it might take a break following low ratings, potentially marking an end to more adventures in the near future.

The rumors about the show’s cancellation have been proven false. In fact, BBC won’t decide on future seasons until after the current one has aired, as confirmed by a spokesperson to RadioTimes. So, rest assured, “Doctor Who” is not being discontinued.

Previously mentioned, the verdict for season three won’t be given until after season two has aired. Our agreement with Disney+ is for 26 episodes, and it remains that half of these are yet to be broadcast. Regarding further details about the Doctor and upcoming plots, we don’t usually discuss those matters.

In the latest setup of the long-lasting series, Ncuti Gatwa plays the role of the Fifteenth Doctor. The esteemed Time Lord will be accompanied by Ruby Sunday, portrayed by Millie Gibson, and new character Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu, in the forthcoming season.

This upcoming season marks the second one following Russell T Davies’s return as the show’s headwriter. Earlier, he mentioned his desire to make the show more straightforward and appealing to a younger audience – aspects that are typically overlooked in discussions about its ratings.

People seem to be overlooking this aspect, but it’s more straightforward and appeals to a younger demographic, and it’s succeeding. The under-16s and those aged 16 to 34 are a significant part of its audience. Although its ratings aren’t impressive, it’s performing exceptionally well among the younger audience we were aiming for.

In the United Kingdom, the television series “Doctor Who” is broadcast on BBC One, while it can be found on Disney+ in other regions. For those in the UK, classic episodes of “Doctor Who” are accessible through the BBC iPlayer platform.
