BBC releases first trailer for Motherland spinoff

The BBC has unveiled the first trailer for Motherland spin-off series Amandaland.

In the approaching performance, we delve into the life of beloved character Amanda, portrayed by Lucy Punch, after her divorce. As she adjustments to a smaller living space, she also navigates the challenges of raising teenage sons Manus and Georgie.

A sneak peek at the upcoming six-part show hints at future shenanigans, such as ongoing friction between Amanda and her mom Felicity (played by Joanna Lumley), and Amanda’s challenges with expanding her burgeoning Instagram business.

Additionally, we meet the character portrayed by Derry Girls actress Siobhan McSweeney, who reacts to Amanda’s continuous mistakes with the comment: “It’s as if I’m witnessing a slow-motion car accident.

In the show, Amanda moves to South Harlesden since her children are attending secondary school. Yet, her mother continues to offer Amanda subtle criticisms and hidden jabs regarding her new living situation.

In a fresh twist, Anne Flynn, who is now referred to as Philippa Dunne, once again appears in the storyline, this time acting as Amanda’s assistant. Together, they navigate the intricacies of the social environment within the new school, while also managing their roles as parents.

The newly announced cast members are Rochenda Sandall from “Line of Duty,” Samuel Anderson known for his role in “Gavin & Stacey,” Peter Serafinowicz, who starred in “The Gentlemen,” and Ekow Quartey, a familiar face from the “Harry Potter” series.

Previously, co-creator Sharon Horgan expressed heartfelt sadness when parting ways with “Motherland“. There’s a deep affection for the series and its characters that still lingers.

It was truly exciting to continue the journey with Amanda and Anne, along with the addition of Felicity. The performances by Lucy, Phillipa, and Joanna are exceptional, and they’re joined by a fresh, hilarious, and gifted ensemble.

I’m eagerly looking forward to displaying the upcoming aspects of parenthood, as well as the unique camaraderie that forms at school entrances.

Amandaland premieres on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Wednesday, February 5.
