BBC releases first look at Liverpool-set drama with Marcella’s Anna Friel
The BBC has unveiled a sneak peek at Anna Friel, who stars in Marcella, in her upcoming Liverpool-based drama titled Unforgivable.
Written by Time screenwriter Jimmy McGovern and helmed by director Julia Ford (of Showtrial), the forthcoming series delves into the devastating effects of grooming and sexual abuse within a single family.
In Liverpool, this fictional story unfolds about the Mitchell family, who grapple with the consequences of a heinous act perpetrated within their ranks, committed by one of their own relatives.

Following the completion of his prison term, Bobby Schofield resides at St. Maura’s, an establishment that provides him with both housing and rehabilitative support after his release.
Guided by former nun Katherine (Anna Maxwell Martin), Joe embarks on a therapeutic journey to understand the reasons behind his abusive behavior and confront the repercussions of his actions.
According to the summary, Anna (played by Anna Friel) grapples with the significant repercussions of Joe’s crime on her family members, including her sons Tom (Austin Haynes) and Peter (Fin McParland), as well as her father, Brian (David Threlfall).
As an enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating this drama that delves deeply into the far-reaching impacts of abuse, exploring it from various viewpoints. It promises to shed light on the challenging journey of those entangled in such a situation as they strive to find their way forward amidst the chaos and destruction.
In the initial glimpses, Friel is depicted as Anna, seemingly employed at a supermarket, standing behind the cash register. Simultaneously, Schofield is portrayed as Joe, making his way through a penitentiary accompanied by correctional officers.
In these newly released images, actors such as Anna Maxwell Martin (known for Motherland), David Threlfall (famous for Shameless), and Austin Haynes (recognized from All Creatures Great and Small) are all depicted playing their respective roles.
Discussing the upcoming series set to broadcast on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two this year, McGovern expressed his astonishment at the talented cast and crew gathered for this project. He admitted that the production is demanding, yet he’s eagerly anticipating its release.
A release date for Unforgivable is yet to be announced.
