Jo Whiley, a presenter for BBC Radio 2, has announced that her father has passed away. She shared a heartfelt message on social media yesterday, describing her dad, Martin, as a wonderfully kind man whose greatest joy was bringing happiness to others.
Jo posted a series of photos on Instagram, remembering him as a truly selfless person who loved to help others and bring joy to those around him.
I’ve received so many messages today saying ‘Martin was a character,’ which perfectly describes him. Everyone knew Martin Whiley – whether from the pub, around our village, or picking up my kids from school. He was the best school pickup helper (we called it ‘Manny’) long before it became popular!
The actress credits her father with instilling in her a lifelong love of music. She fondly remembers him bringing a large boombox to the construction site where he worked as an electrician, playfully calling him the original DJ. His enthusiasm for music never faded, and she specifically recalled his deep appreciation for artists like Elbow, Coldplay, and Dido.
Jo shared a touching story about her father’s youth. He contracted tuberculosis as a child and spent two years recovering at a hospital in London, all by himself. Interestingly, this experience is the reason her whole family now supports the Tottenham Hotspur football club – Spurs!

When he met my mum, it was like he finally got the family he’d always dreamed of and found real love. Because he knew what it was like to feel unloved as a child, he spent his whole life making sure others felt cared for.

Jo had previously revealed that her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a long-term illness that affects the brain (according to the NHS).
