BBC radio presenter hailed a ‘true legend’ in broadcasting dies aged 86 after a long illness as tributes pour in

BBC radio presenter Gerry Kersey hailed a broadcasting ‘legend’ has passed away aged 86.

It’s said that the journalist from BBC Sheffield had been unwell for a while, and he sadly passed away on Friday morning, with his wife Christine present.

Over time, Gerry had a career that spanned both the BBC and independent radio stations. Additionally, he pursued his passion for art by showcasing his artwork in various exhibitions and took to the stage in the theater as well.

On Sunday, BBC Sheffield announced with regret that Gerry Kersey, a previous host of BBC Radio Sheffield, has unfortunately passed away.

For a long time, Gerry served as a consistent and impactful host on BBC Radio Sheffield, following by Radio Hallam previously. Behind the scenes, he proved to be an exceptionally talented presenter and a genuinely warm and helpful coworker.

‘He was also a talented artist. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.’

Prior to the advent of radio, Gerry used to work at a steelworks facility. In an interview with The Sheffield Star in 2018, he described it as follows: “It was sweltering, humid, dimly lit, and perilous, with the air heavily laden with chemicals.

However, the scene was equally impressive, showcasing flowing molten metal, sparks flying, and rugged workers skillfully handling large forges and machines.

Or, more colloquially:

But let me tell you, it was quite a sight too – all that glowing hot steel, sparks popping everywhere, and burly blokes working their magic on the big machinery!

Instead of choosing a different path, he opted for a career in broadcasting, which earned him just £12 a week. However, he had his wife’s backing to give it a try and see where it might lead.

A number of tributes poured in from the star from former to colleagues to fans.

Katrina Bunker, the Head of BBC Yorkshire, stated that Gerry was an authentic icon in local broadcasting, having begun his career back in 1968 as one of the early voices on BBC Radio Sheffield.

‘Wherever you went around the area you would always meet someone who loved Gerry’s show.’

In the subsequent phases of his career, I became recognized for my request-driven and sentimental broadcasts. Even as recently as his final show in 2020, an overwhelming amount of letters, emails, and phone calls poured in, a testament to his enduring appeal.

‘Wherever you went around the area you would always meet someone who loved Gerry’s show.

In private conversations, Gerry displayed the same courteousness and kindness that he showed on air. He consistently motivated others, radiated warmth, and took pride in his continued presence on the radio for over five decades. His absence will undoubtedly be felt deeply by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A previous colleague and football commentator, Alan Biggs, remarked: ‘Folks in Sheffield will feel a sense of loss following Gerry Kersey’s demise. Gerry was an integral part of Radio Sheffield and Radio Hallam (where I had the pleasure of working alongside an exceptional individual).’

‘Super talented; actor & artist also. Thinking of Gerry’s family & many friends.’

He commented: “It’s not only limited to Sheffield, I would have mentioned South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire if there were more characters available for this post. The heartfelt responses I’ve received are truly remarkable and I am confident they will bring comfort to Gerry’s family.

It’s deeply unfortunate to hear this news. Gerry, indeed, was a dedicated servant who tirelessly supported our city and community here in Sheffield.

‘My sincere condolences go out to Gerry’s family and friends at this difficult time.’

It’s truly unfortunate to learn about Gerry’s demise. I remember his tenure at Hallam FM fondly, and especially his recent stint at BBC Sheffield, particularly during the Sunday evening program where our paths often intersected.

‘My Thoughts & Prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues.’

Others expressed their respect for Gerry, saying: “Upon hearing this sad news, I was instantly reminded of Gerry’s voice that played on the radio as I was growing up. It’s so sad, and my sympathies go out to his family. Rest in peace, the fantastic Gerry Kersey. Your voice will forever be cherished and never forgotten here in Sheffield!

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of loss, much like losing a cherished family member who was always present in my childhood home. Rest In Peace.

‘It’s disheartening to hear this news, as I always enjoyed tuning into his program.’

I recall hearing Gerry Kersey not only on Radio Sheffield but also earlier on Hallam. It’s a significant loss for the broadcasting world.
