BBC Radio 2’s Scott Mills recalls being almost sacked by bosses
BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show host Scott Mills has recalled the time he was almost sacked by bosses.
In November, it became public knowledge that Mills, a former host of the afternoon program, would be replacing Zoe Ball as the fresh host of the Breakfast Show.
In an interview with Dermot O’Leary, Mills shared that his tenure at the BBC nearly ended prematurely due to an alcohol-fueled incident at the Brit Awards in 2001.
In response to a clip played by O’Leary, I admitted that after the 2001 incident, my bosses were so enraged that they nearly let me go from my job due to my slurred speech at the time.
Mills clarified that phrase as “That’s how to almost get fired from BBC,” referring to an incident at the Brit Awards. He admitted that he became overly excited because it was his first time there, and before he knew it, someone asked him about his on-air schedule.
“And I said, ‘Four?’ and they went, ‘Well, it’s two now’. Oh no! It was horrendous.”
Speaking about his mistake, Mills referred to it as “foolish and unwise,” stating that his superiors were understandably upset. He then disclosed that he ended up spending the remainder of his night dozing off in the Radio 1 studio.
He mentioned that there used to be a place at Radio 1 called the den. He added, “I know it wasn’t permitted, but instead of going home, I could catch a few hours of sleep there. I was quite young back then, in my twenties.
Earlier, Mills spoke highly of his transition to the Breakfast Show, acknowledging: “Zoe Ball has truly excelled in hosting this program for the last six years. I’m absolutely thrilled to take over from her.
I’ve always harbored a long-cherished aspiration, and now it’s finally happening: taking over as the host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, in the esteemed footsteps of Sir Terry [Wogan], Chris [Evans] and Zoe.
