BBC Radio 2 improvises last-minute replacement after Vernon Kay no-show
This morning, BBC Radio 2 needed to quickly find a substitute for Vernon Kay since he was delayed due to a train breakdown.
Every weekday at 9:30 am, it’s typically Kay who hosts the morning show. However, on this particular day, he was unavailable, so Sara Cox, standing in for Scott Mills, decided to prolong the Breakfast Show by half an hour.
Fortunately, as luck would have it, Gary Davies stepped up to host the show in place of Kay at the last second, preventing any disruption.

As reported by Davies, Kay found herself stranded on a Chiltern Railways train due to a power failure. This malfunction left the air conditioning system inoperable amidst scorching 30-degree weather, and moreover, the train doors refused to open.
Davies joked, “He isn’t leaving and he’s on his way here. Do you think he’ll arrive? If you see him, please tell me where he can be found.” He then played a message from Kay.
In the voice message, Kay expressed gratitude to Davies for hosting his morning show, stating: “Hey Mike, this is Leonard. I’m seated on a train, so thank you very much for standing in for me.
In a noisy train compartment, Kay requested her fellow travelers to greet radio audiences, praising Davies as a “gentleman” and wishing him an excellent broadcast.
Through posts on his Instagram Stories, Kay casually expressed, “I’m not exercising right now. Could you send me some deodorant and coffee?
Thankfully, the air conditioning got switched back on again, and in a different tale, he joyfully wrote: “AC is functioning once more!!!
Eventually, Davies informed the audience that the substitute train carrying the passengers had malfunctioned as well, which left Kay stranded and unable to attend the show.
In his closing message, Kay mentioned that he was still anticipating another train at Wembley Station, which means he won’t be able to make it to work today.
